I met this girl once who had a baby.? She got a job as a waitress at a restaurant just so she could afford to buy formula and diapers.? She didn?t want to leave her baby with relatives, but she had to do it.? Or did she ?
If she used cloth diapers and breastfed her baby, she could have stayed at home and raised her?child.
In our society it is considered shameful and taboo in many social groups to be frugal.? Especially when it comes to children.? If you don?t spend money on your children it means you don?t love them and you are a bad parent.? Many people also believe that using cloth diapers will cause your child to develop a nasty disease and die.
Two babies were born this year in my family.? One was born to a family with a sensible middle class income.? The other was born to a 16 year old single unwed mother with no job.
One of these babies is breastfed, wears cloth diapers, and is dressed completely in clothes purchased second hand from garage sales.
The other wears disposable diapers, drinks formula, and clothes bought from Walmart.
The grandmother of one spent $200 on a huge baby shower in the hopes of obtaining loads of gifts, the other baby?s grandmother asked some friends to help bring food to a small baby shower.
Guess which one is which.
This is baby LeRoy
And this is baby Agatha
Which baby costs less money?
If you guessed baby Agatha, you?re right.
Baby Agatha is my niece and for some bazaar reason her mother, Charlotte, got this strange idea in her head that babies don?t have to be expensive.
Here are some things she did before hand to save money.
1. Decided to breastfeed?it?s cheaper
2. Made some easy to use cloth diapers and cloth baby wipes
3. Found a crib on the side of the road that someone was going to throw away, and fixed it up.
4. Bought some cute baby clothes at a couple of garage sales.
Dottie threw Charlotte a baby shower and about 8 of Dottie?s friends showed up.
Charlotte realized that a baby really doesn?t need mounds of clothes and baby toys, so she took a lot of them back to the store and exchanged them all for a rocking chair to rock her baby in.
Baby Leroy?s grandmother sent out 200 invitations to everyone in the extended family and everyone she knew.? She rented a place to hold the baby shower and then spend loads of money on brisket to cater the even.? She was very mad when only 5 people showed up.? She thought it was rude and horrible of all those people not to come and help them out.
If only she had the idea in her head that you can get ahead in life if you only try to save money any way you can.
Leroy?s family has very little money and yet they still can scrape up the necessary money to buy him disposable diapers.? If they used cloth diapers they might be able to use the money they save on books with information on how to build a house with recycled materials.? I have read about people who have done this and built some very nice looking houses that have ended up in magazines.? Right now, Leroy?s family is living in a run down mobile home on a very expensive piece of land in the country.? They don?t have to live that way.? But oh well, nobody asked my advice, did they?
