Video: After officer?s gift, homeless man ?lit up like it was Christmas?

>>> finally tonight's it was a photo taken by a tourist who saw something on a cold night in times square . and the photo has warmed a lot of hearts as it has gone around the world on the web. and in the process, it has made a new york city police officer something of a hero. the story behind the picture from nbc's stephanie gosk.

>> reporter: in times square , visitors tend to look up, struck by the bright lights and billboards. but officer larry diprimo had his eyes on the streets, and on a homeless man in the street.

>> it was freezing, first thing i thought, this was absolutely unacceptable. i went up to him.

>> reporter: he was on the counter terrorism beat when he saw the homeless man sitting right here with no shoes on. in that moment, he thought it was not just his job to protect, but also his job to serve. the most immediate need was obvious, and the shoe store was right there.

>> the officer was inspiring, i worked in the city for about ten years, and nobody has really taken this sort of initiative.

>> reporter: conno cut him a deal on the water-proof winter boats, the officer paid with his own money.

>> i think this is an important reminder that some people have it worse.

>> reporter: jennifer foster, a tourist, saw as he gave the man a new pair of boots.

>> this man's face lit up like it was christmas, and like he had just been given literally a million dollars.

>> reporter: foster couldn't resist taking the now-famous photo, nearly half a million likes on facebook, and the number keeps rising.

>> the fact he took the time on his shift, his own money, to do this for that gentleman, with his own money, i can't say enough about it.

>> reporter: this this city, they're call new york city 's finest, officer diprimo is a good reason why. stephanie gosk, nbc news, new york.

>>> how about that, and while random acts of kindness take place every day, let's celebrate this one. the officer will be a guest live in the studio on "today." that

Cooperation between Carl Zeiss and PTB on EUV lithography extended

This press release is available in German.

European companies are the world leaders in the development of EUV lithography for the manufacture of semiconductor chips with even shorter wavelengths than up to now, i.e. with 13.5 nanometres in the spectral range of the so-called "Extreme UV (EUV)". The volume production of lens systems and wafer scanners of EU lithography (EUVL) is planned for 2014. In this development, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is at the fore. With a new EUV beamline at PTB's own electron storage ring the Metrology Light Source (MLS) in Berlin-Adlershof it will characterize EUVL lens systems for this purpose. The cooperation with Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH, which has been running since 1998, has now been extended for another four years. PTB measurements will help to give proof of the quality of the Zeiss lens systems in the so-called "steppers" (lithography machines) of the Dutch company ASML, the global market leader in this field.

The combination is unique worldwide: although there are a number of electron storage rings, and although a national metrology institute exists in almost every country as the highest authority in the field of measurements, only the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt has its own modern electron storage ring the Metrology Light Source and the measurement arrangements required for the high-precision characterization of EUVL lens systems. The MLS has been operated since 2008; it furnishes synchrotron radiation from the terahertz range up to the EUV range and has clearly extended PTB's measurement capabilities at the nearby electron storage ring BESSY II, where it uses X-rays on a large scale for the various metrological tasks.

The new EUV beamline is particularly suited for the investigation of photodetectors and structured optical elements and has after the commissioning phase been increasingly used since the beginning of this year for measurements within the scope of research cooperations, in particular for EUVL. "Our greatest strength which is very well received by the cooperation partners consists in the so-called "At-wavelength measurements". We characterize the lens systems at the EUVL working wavelength and not only with visible light. Our measurements therefore directly describe the behaviour of lens systems in the production machines", explains Frank Scholze, head of the PTB working group.

The great demand from industry had induced PTB to develop its measurement capabilities at the two storage rings even further. In mid-2013, the large EUV reflectometer of BESSY II is to move to the MLS. In its place, an EUV scatterometer/ellipsometer will be installed which has been particularly suited for scatter experiments. Then, at the latest, a total of approximately 6000 hours of synchrotron radiation measuring time per year will be available to PTB for EUV metrology.

Also in other areas, PTB has clearly extended the field of "metrology with synchrotron radiation" by the commissioning of new beamlines at the MLS. Compared to its predecessor at BESSY II, a new measuring set-up for the calibration of radiation sources now also allows measurements to be carried out at wavelengths below 40 nm. Calibrated radiation sources in the vacuum-UV (VUV) and the EUV are, for example, of great importance for the characterization of space telescopes for solar and atmospheric research. In addition, the new undulator beamline provides monochromatized intensive and profoundly polarized radiation from the IR range up to the EUV range. At present, the first quantitative investigations of surfaces are being carried out by means of UV/VUV ellipsometry and electron spectroscopy together with partners from the research site Adlershof. Furthermore, a new near-field microscope has been put into operation at the infrared beamline of the MLS. es/ptb

How to Teach Your Child to Urban Survival Skills | Top Secret Writers

urban survival skills

Those critical first few hours or days after a disastrous incident can be some of the most important moments for the survival of you and your child.

This article isn?t about the many skills needed to make a long trudge through a protracted survival situation; it?s about gathering your pieces of life back together in order to start over again. If you need some starting points on how to teach those skills to your child, you might want to see the previous article on helping your child learn survival skills.

As the recent storms that hit the U.S. East Coast demonstrated, your life can be turned upside down very quickly.

From unexpected everyday situations to emergencies like a harsh storm, sudden flood, large power outage, or urban conflict, your child can be quickly cut off from your help before you know it.

But, your child can also be prepared.

Specific knowledge of neighborhoods and systems of living and transportation vary between urban centers of the world.

New York is different from Jakarta, Moscow from Tokyo, Durban from Belmopan, Santiago from Copenhagen, Cairo from Addis Ababa, Bamako, Maputo, Sao Tome?

However, there are some skills and plans that can be used in many urban settings. Every family needs a ?Bug In? or ?Get Home? plan.

Many people have read about ?Bug Out? bags and plans for getting away, but should these be the only considerations? Perhaps the primary situation for which to prepare a child in an urban setting is that of being away from you and your home when an emergency strikes the area.

urban survival

Preparing Your Get Home Kit

A simple ?Get Home Kit? could include a cell phone, some cash, some subway tokens, an energy bar, a small bottle of water, a street map, a bright bandana that you?ve both seen, a whistle, and a small flashlight in the child?s backpack. You know your city and should adjust this kit to fit your situation.

A little physical fitness can go a long way. Your child doesn?t have to be an Olympic athlete, but making sure that he lets go of the video games or TV sometimes and even simply walks regularly will really improve his chances in a survival situation.

If your child has a disability, your coordination with others is even more crucial to ensure that there is enough care available.

Avoid the temptation to load your child down with equipment for every conceivable situation. This is a common mistake and, just as commonly, children end up not having any of it when it?s needed because it?s too much weight or bulk to tote around every day.

1. Stay Put
Just like wilderness survival, it?s best for the child to stay where he or she is if it?s safe. Like in the woods, people searching for him will probably head directly to the child?s last known location.

?Safe? refers to physical surroundings as well as human, health, and similar concerns.

Remember that many events can cause dangerous falling debris, flooding, downed power lines, and other hazards for a long time after the initial destruction, so the child should find a protected area that still has structural integrity while staying in the company of trusted adults such as a teacher.

urban survival

2. Communicate

If phone services are working, obviously, you and your child should use them to communicate. Hopefully, you?ve taught your child about using 911 for help, too.

If you talk with your child and know the location, if possible, it is best for your child to stay put until you reach her. It?s simply safer for a child to stay in an identified location rather than leave it.
However, it is not unusual for phone service to be restricted or even completely gone. If so, your child should know what to do.

Again, the best situation is for your child to stay in a safe, known location. If she?s been relocated to another position (by flooding or transport by emergency personnel, for instance), she should try to stay there if it?s safe.

Whenever she moves, she should leave a note before moving. Practice finding good ways to do this.

At the very least, the child should write her name and where she?s going. ?Melanie-Aunt Anna.? If she can, include a date and time. If all you find is this message, you will know she was still alive at that time and where she planned to go when she left. Find places and ways to leave the note that will help to ensure it will be there for you to read when you arrive.

Tack the note to a prominent wall. Use a marker or paint to put it on the part of the stairs that?s not turned to rubble. Try to make it secure (not simply left on a table, etc., where it might be knocked off or blown away) and easy to see or in some predetermined or obvious location-it?s of no use if you can?t find it.
3. Secondary Help

If there?s one thing that disasters and conflicts in many areas of the globe have taught us about child survival in urban settings, it?s that your child will be safer in the care of a trusted adult.

urban survival skills

I?ve seen some of the results of these situations. There are many examples of children being endangered physically, psychologically, and sexually when alone following a disaster or the initiation of war.

Where is your child during much of the day? At school? If so, is there a parent, relative, or friend you truly trust who lives near the school and can pick up your child? Have you given written permission to the school to turn over your child to this person? Are you comfortable with giving that person permission to take your child?

4. Backup

Ok, let?s presume neither you nor Aunt Anna show up; what next? If your child is at school or some other safe public location with people in positions of trust such as teachers or emergency personnel, her best option is to stay there.

If your child is not in a safe situation, and none of the options above is readily available, he will have to consider moving. If it?s close enough and still in good condition, he might go to your home. If not, have another safe spot to meet that?s near his location.

Your child needs to continue watching out for falling debris and unsafe situations while moving.

This could be your secondary?s house, a fire station, police station, hospital, public utilities building, supermarket, or other public spot that both of you know and can find easily. It might be better to try for the closest safe place rather than having the risks of traveling a long distance.

Carrying some cash that might help your child in this situation is a good idea. Credit card services have been known to fail during emergencies. A spare subway ticket or similar is a good idea as well.

While this article isn?t meant to cover all aspects of survival it is, hopefully, a starting point for you to decide how you, yourself, will make your own plan to keep your child safe and reconnect during the crucial early stages of a crisis.

Your Reason for Doing This in the First Place

A final point: remember the reasons you want to survive.

Plan and prepare, but try to avoid the pitfall of becoming so engrossed in planning for a disaster that might or might not happen in the future that you miss the life you have with your child today.

?Some people are making such thorough preparation for rainy days that they aren?t enjoying today?s sunshine.? ? William Feather

After ballot box victories, gay marriage battle heads back to courts, legislatures

People line up for early voting in Silver Spring, Md., Oct. 27, 2012. (Reuters/Gary Cameron)People line up for early voting in Silver Spring, Md., Oct. 27, 2012. (Reuters/Gary Cameron)

As the U.S. Supreme Court meets on Friday to consider whether to wade into the issue of gay marriage, the justices face a reality not even a month old: For the first time, voters have chosen to legalize same-sex nuptials.

The shift that took place on Election Day has energized gay marriage advocates, who believe the expressions of support for their cause in four states will influence the Supreme Court's decision making.

At a private conference on Friday, the justices will consider whether to hear several cases dealing with the rights of gay couples who are married, want to get married or are in domestic partnerships. They could announce as soon as Monday which, if any, of the cases they'll accept.

On Nov. 6, voters approved ballot measures that legalized gay marriage in Maine, Maryland and Washington state and defeated a ballot measure in Minnesota that would have added an amendment to the state's Constitution banning same sex nuptials. It was a remarkable breakthrough for gay rights advocates, since until this year voters had rejected same-sex marriage in 32 states that held popular votes on the issue.

Advocates say such electoral victories are unlikely to be repeated anytime soon. The action will instead revert to legislative chambers and the courts, where all gay marriage victories were achieved prior to Election Day 2012.

"It's almost hard to find the right adjective to describe the monumental victory we had winning all four states," said Michael Cole-Schwartz, director of communication for the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group. "Marriage equality nationwide is not a question of if but when. It's up to us to accelerate our efforts."

Activists are looking to state legislatures in Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey and Rhode Island as the next places where the legalization of gay marriage or civil unions will be debated.

Right now, Oregon stands the best chance of being the next state to legalize gay marriage by popular vote, advocates say.

Jeana Frazzini, executive director of Basic Rights Oregon, said her group is aiming to make a decision early next year about whether to push for a ballot initiative in 2014 that would overturn the state's constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage, which passed in 2004.

"It's still very, very difficult to win a ballot measure," Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, said.

But Wolfson pointed to three factors that helped gay marriage go 4-0 on Election Day this year after so many previous losses: more "engagement" with voters; the increased visibility of gay marriage in the years since it has been legal in a handful of states; and better campaigns around the ballot measures.

President Barack Obama also has influenced the debate, advocates say. In May, Obama announced his support for gay marriage the day after voters in North Carolina overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment banning such nuptials.

Still, opponents of same sex nuptials don't see the string of victories as evidence of the inevitable.

Frank Schubert of the National Organization for Marriage said his group and others that promote traditional marriage were outspent in the battles this year. He also noted that the four states that expressed support for gay marriage this year were all traditionally Democratic and supported Obama in the presidential contest.

Schubert called the results "very disappointing" but said, "I don't think it signals a change in the mood of the country as a whole."

NOM does expect to be on the defensive "in the very short term" fighting state legislatures' attempts to legalize gay marriage, Schubert said. But his group and others hope to play offense again in two years?in Indiana, where the legislature already has taken steps to put a state constitutional amendment on the ballot that would ban same sex nuptials.

Schubert suggested the Supreme Court will have an impact on what happens in 2014 when it comes to one of the cases being considered on Friday: whether Proposition 8, California's 2008 voter-enacted ban on gay marriage, ?violates the U.S. Constitution.

The case was brought on behalf of two gay California couples who want to get married but can't because of the ban. The case originally had the potential to establish a right to same-sex marriage nationwide, but as it's framed now after a trip through the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, it only applies to California.

If the high court decides to accept the case and ultimately upholds Prop. 8, Schubert said he thinks there will be another ballot battle over gay marriage in California in 2014, with supporters trying to make gay marriage legal.

The justices could also decline to hear the Prop. 8 case, which would make gay marriage legal by default in California because of the 9th Circuit's ruling. Or they could decide to hear the case and strike down Prop. 8.

Also before the justices on Friday are cases relating to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal law that bars the U.S. government from recognizing same-sex marriage. Another deals with an Arizona law that denies benefits to state employees' domestic partners.

Many court watchers think it's likely the justices will accept one or more of the DOMA cases. Arguments would be held in the first half of 2013, and a ruling would be issued by June. If the court strikes down DOMA, it would give more rights to gay couples who are already married in states where it's legal, but it wouldn't expand gay marriage to more states.

Despite the all the potential action at the high court, Wolfson of Freedom to Marry says gay rights advocates' state-by-state strategy?of continuing to foster a groundswell of support through "persuasion and conversations"? doesn't change.

"If they do take one of those cases, then it even adds to the urgency of winning more states and growing the majority as much as we can while the court ponders," he said.

Secrets to a successful barbeque party

> Before using the barbeque, carefully read the instructions, paying attention to warning labels and safety information.
> If you do not have a big grill, try working with three or four smaller sized barbecue grills and designate each one for a different food item ? one each for meat, vegetarian dishes, fish etc.
> Good organisation is the key. Keep all the necessary ingredients, seasonings and tools prepared, including the rack and foil for resting.
> Place the barbeque on a level surface and make sure it is well ventilated. Use long handled tools and wear oven gloves.
> Never leave a barbecue unattended.
> Time and technique of cooking will vary depending on the weather. Food cooks quicker when it is hot, but takes longer if it is cold or windy.
> Cover the barbecue with a lid during the cooking process, especially for the larger cuts. This will cook larger cuts evenly and will lock in the flavours.
> For hygiene reasons never mix raw and cooked meat. Keep raw meat cool indoors until just before cooking. Wash your hands before cooking and after handling raw meat.
> If you are planning to host a party, store enough fuel for the evening. Also invest in a cool box to store uncooked food.
> Barbecue food makes lavish use of herbs, oil and lemon juice in the marinades. Hence pairing grilled food with the right drinks will enhance the whole barbecue experience. Robust wines full of flavour are a great match!

Dishes recommeded for a barbeque party at home:

> Seafood like marinated prawns, lobsters, fish of choice and availability (personal choices ? salmon, sea bass, trout or Indian halibut)
> Whole stuffed roasted chicken, chicken wings with a barbeque marinade
> Root veggies like tapioca, yam, sweet potatoes (can be served with any other dish or by itself)
> Steaks (tenderloin preferred as it is easier to cook) with choice of sauces, spare ribs, pork or lamb chops
> Cold meat like German sausages, salami, hot dogs and ham burgers are always a hot favourite
> Cheese sauce, barbeque sauce, spicy devilled tomato or any fresh fruit juice base are good accompanying sauces
> Corn on the cob
> Marinated vegetables

Lighting Updates

Updating or augmenting your lighting within a room can be an excellent room update with only a minor investment. Lighting does more than just add light to a room, it conveys style and atmosphere to your space.? Simply plugging in a new lamp can make a noticeable difference and lighting really brightens a room!? Here are some tips to update your room with use of lighting.

lighting for home improvementFixtures

Chances are your room has an overhead light fixture operated via wall switch close to the door where you enter the room.? Swapping out this fixture is a simple task for most DIYers.? New fixtures can be found at any home center and the costs for a new one can be as low as $20. Most fixtures come in a variety of finishes including:? brass, gold, silver, bronze, antique, brushed nickel, chrome, white or black. Fixtures come in a variety of styles including: pendant, track-lighting, ceiling mount, chandelier, flush mount, semi flush mount, bowl pendant, linear suspension, spotlight, mono rail, recessed, drum pendant, and mini pendant. To install, be sure to turn off the power to the existing fixture before removing it.? Then follow the directions that accompany the new fixture to install.

Bulbs

There are many variations of bulbs available today including LED, CFL, Halogen, and the old standard incandescent.? Bulbs give off different types of light that are considered either warm or cool light.? Changing the type of bulbs you use along with the lumens will change the rooms atmosphere and feel. Lumens is the standard measure of light given off by light bulb.? A standard 100 watt incandescent bulb gives off 1600 lumens.? The higher the lumens the brighter the light.

Task Lighting

Add task lighting for different areas of the room.? Most bedrooms have a set of nightstands on both sides of the bed.? Adding a new matching set of nightstand lights is an inexpensive addition to update the look of your room.? Also, a new set of matching floor lamps are a great addition for rooms without nightstands.? You can get ideas of styles of task lighting lamps by visiting a lighting store, viewing interior design websites and printed magazines.?? If your budget does permit new lamps then consider simply updating the lampshades of your existing lamps.

Groups Plans Boycott of Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade

A group opposed to a proposal to raise rents on residential dock space in Newport Harbor said it is prepared to boycott next month?s 104th annual Christmas Boat Parade there.

Stop the Dock Tax said it represents 1,200 residential dock owners in Newport Harbor, and has reserved advertising space in newspapers throughout Southern California to publicize the boycott of the event.

The boat parade draws visitors from throughout the region during its annual run, and is set for Dec. 19-23 this year.

The threat of a boycott comes as the Newport Beach City Council considers the increase, with a vote that could come as early as Wednesday night.

The city?s proposal would increase the rent for residential docks from a flat $100 annual fee to 52.5 cents per square foot. The change could add anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars in annual costs for homeowners with dock space owned by the city.

?The residential docks are attached to the homes that rim Newport Harbor,? Stop the Dock Tax said in a press release. ?Each year we voluntarily spend thousands of dollars to lavishly decorate our homes and boats in the holiday tradition. It is reported that one million people view the annual Christmas Boat Parade.?

Properties on private waterways or county tidelands would be exempt from the increase.

The increases for city-owned docks would be phased in through 2015.

?This is an unnecessary money grab and we can?t take it anymore, said Stop the Dock Tax Chairman Bob McCaffrey. ?The money we use to decorate our homes will have to be used to pay the new tax.?

The proposal to raise rents on residential docks follows a similar move on commercial marinas in Newport Harbor.

Creating A Family Recipe Scrapbook | Fulton Tea Party Home - Ike ...

I can not tell you how many times I?ve called my mom and said ?mom I just have to have your recipe for such and such?. It?s been a slow accumulation of recipes, but she chuckles each time I realize I need yet another recipe from her.

Now that I have an adult daughter of my own I really wanted to pass the recipes on to her also. Many of these recipes she?s been eating since she was old enough for solids. My daughter also has a recipe book from her aunt on her dad?s side.

Recipe scrapbooks can be given to aunts, uncles, cousins, children etc. A 6?6 scrapbook works wonderfully. They are large enough to hold a 3?5 index card. You can also use an 8?8 scrapbook and have the recipes on paper, instead of index cards.

I think it?s a great mix to combine photos and recipes. For example, a group family photo at the beginning of the album is a great way to start off the album. If you?ve asked for recipes from multiple family members, put a photo of the recipe submitter on one page and the recipe on the opposite page.

It?s also a great help to have a shopping list. Consider the actual recipe on one page and a shopping list on the opposite page. I very often take a recipe to the market with me and shop off the recipe page. By creating the list, the recipe book holder just needs to remove the shopping list page and take it to the market.

Another idea is to create a bit of history with your recipes. If you?ve had several family members contribute recipes, consider having the recipe on page, photos on one page and a bit of information on the author on a 3rd page. Most scrapbooks are very expandable, so there is room for many pages in one album.

All of my cookbooks have measurement charts and converters in them, so when making a recipe album, it?s great to add this information to either the back or the front.

Recipe albums are a great gift for both the new bride, especially if the gift comes from her husband?s family with recipes for all of the dishes he grew up with and for the college graduate setting up their first home.

Immune system could play a central role in age-related macular degeneration

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Changes in how genes in the immune system function may result in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of visual impairment in older adults, based on preliminary research conducted by National Institutes of Health (NIH) investigators.

"Our findings are epigenetic in nature, meaning that the underlying DNA is normal but gene expression has been modified, likely by environmental factors, in an adverse way," said Dr. Robert Nussenblatt, chief of the National Eye Institute (NEI) Laboratory of Immunology. Environmental factors associated with AMD include smoking, diet, and aging. "This is the first epigenetic study revealing the molecular mechanisms for any eye disease."

The study identified decreased levels of DNA methylation, a chemical reaction that switches off genes, on the interleukin-17 receptor C gene (IL17RC). The lack of DNA methylation led to increased gene activity and, in turn, increased levels of IL17RC proteins in patients with AMD. IL17RC is a protein that promotes immune responses to infections, such as fungal attacks.

The study, conducted by research teams from the NEI and other NIH institutes, including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine; the University of Melbourne, Australia; and Oregon Health and Science University, appears in the Nov. 29 issue of Cell Reports.

"Our study also suggests IL17- and IL17RC-mediated immune responses can be crucial in causing AMD," added Dr. Lai Wei, also of NEI's Laboratory of Immunology and first author on the paper. "By measuring IL17RC gene activity in at-risk patients, we have also potentially identified an early method to detect AMD."

AMD damages the light-sensitive cells of the macula, the central part of the retina that allows us to see fine visual detail. As the disease progresses, patients encounter great difficulty reading, driving, or performing hobbies and tasks that require hand-eye coordination. Treatments exist to prevent severe vision loss in certain types of advanced AMD but none prevent or cure the disease. Currently, 2 million Americans have advanced AMD and another 7 million have intermediate stages.

Recent studies have identified several genes with alterations that increase the risk of developing the disease. In addition, environmental risk factors have also been suggested as possible causes of the disease. One explanation may be that environmental exposures influence DNA methylation, which regulates gene expression. Changes in this process may result in the production of too much or too little of a gene's protein, leading to cellular dysfunction and disease. Changes in DNA methylation have been implicated in cancer, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and many other diseases.

To test whether changes in DNA methylation might play a role in AMD, the investigators evaluated three pairs of twins -- one pair identical and two pairs fraternal -- where only one of the siblings had AMD. Identical twins have the same genetic makeup while fraternal twins share about half of their DNA. Because of their similar genetic backgrounds, identical and fraternal twins can be helpful in studying the differences between the effects of genetics and the environment. When compared with the unaffected twins, methylation patterns were altered in 231 genes of affected twins. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that environmental exposures may epigenetically regulate expression of many genes and lead to AMD.

Among the 231 genes, the investigators found that DNA methylation was absent in a region of the IL17RC gene in twins with AMD. The lack of methylation in the IL17RC gene led to increased gene activity and, in turn, increased levels of its protein in circulating blood. The investigators further validated these findings by comparing seven siblings with and without AMD as well as 202 AMD patients and 96 control subjects without the disease. These studies also found increased IL17RC levels in circulating blood and, most importantly, in the retina of patients with AMD but not controls.

Based on these results, the authors propose that chronic increased levels of the IL17RC protein in the retina likely promote inflammation and recruitment of immune cells that damage the retina and lead to AMD.

"This study strongly implicates epigenetic DNA methylation as another crucial biological pathway for understanding the molecular basis of AMD," according to Nussenblatt.

The investigators next plan to evaluate what environmental factors may be responsible for the regulation of IL17RC and how the epigenetic regulation leading to the chronic inflammation in AMD patients can be reversed by novel therapies. They will also evaluate the role of epigenetics in other eye diseases.

Once-Powerful Grover Norquist Losing Clout Among Republican Leaders

Congress is working to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff," a combination of tax increases and budget cuts that happen Jan. 1 if the federal government doesn't change laws passed in 2010. Republicans have been leery of raising taxes, but now they seem to be on board for some proposals after interviews on Sunday talk shows. Some leading GOP figures denounced Grover Norquist from Americans for Tax Reform and his "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" signed by more than 275 incumbents during the 2012 election cycle.

* AFP reports GOP strategist Matthew Dowd told ABC News that Norquist "is an impediment to good governing. The only thing good about [him] is he's named after a character from 'Sesame Street.'"

* Some prominent Republican legislators to Congress have bucked the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, Rep. Peter King of New York and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina all refuted the pledge, according to ABC News.

* Graham told ABC, "The only pledge we should be making ... is to avoid becoming Greece. Republicans should put revenue on the table."

* Chambliss said, "I care more about my country than I do a 20-year-old pledge," also according to ABC News. King wholeheartedly agreed with the Georgian.

* Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., also broke with Norquist. According to the Washington Post, Corker said, "The only thing I'm honoring is the oath I take ... when I'm sworn in this January."

* Despite the perceived defections, Norquist isn't worried about his "no tax increase" pledge. He told the Washington Post that neither Chambliss nor Graham would vote for a tax increase "between now and 2014."

* Norquist further asserted that Chambliss made his pledge to the "people of Georgia" and not to the founder of Americans for Tax Reform. The tax policy guru felt it was "odd" that the senator attacked him after a stance in early 2011 eschewing tax increases, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

* The Wall Street Journal notes in an exclusive interview that the Washington insider claims Democrats have tried to "trick Republicans into breaking the pledge... this isn't my first rodeo."

* The Journal article also reveals President Barack Obama agreed to keep Bush-era tax cuts on the books for two years.

* Norquist founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985 at the request of President Ronald Reagan. The no-tax pledge was signed by 238 House members in the 112th Congress and 41 senators. Additionally, 13 governors and 1,244 state legislators have also signed on.

* The pledge encourages elected officials to "oppose any and all efforts to increase" marginal income tax rates on individuals and businesses. The verbiage of the pledge also rejects notions of limiting deductions that taxpayers can take to reduce income tax liabilities to the federal government.

One Woman's Journey To Investor Relations In Venture Capital

I have identified four particular ?curves? along the way where I believe my experiences may be helpful for other women who wish to navigate a similar course to venture capital.

By Mary A. Strother (Managing Director, Athenian Venture Partners)

Career moves are often among the biggest life decisions that we will ever make. For women, I feel this rings particularly true. It is typically not easy, and as I have found, the best opportunities are usually the most challenging to find. When the course ahead does not appear clearly charted, however, choosing ?the road less traveled? is worth it.

I experienced this first hand when I decided to shift my more traditional financial marketing and investor relations (IR) career in ?big business? to one focused on building startups and creating value in the alternative assets arena of venture capital (VC).

It was not a straight path at all, but one I think other women can learn from. For more than a decade, I had been engaged in financial sales, marketing, institutional and high-net-worth-individual investor relations and fundraising work with two publicly-traded companies and a large university foundation endowment. Then nearly seven years ago, I made the decision to be bold and to think like an entrepreneur.

I wanted to be part of building something with great upside potential, which would capitalize on my Fortune 500 skillset. While riskier, I ultimately knew that being ?Employee #10? vs. ?Employee #10,000? was where I would find the best reward. Indeed, it was not easy, but eventually, I did succeed in establishing myself in a new, entrepreneurially-based career path in venture capital.

From that long and winding road, I have identified four particular ?curves? along the way where I believe my experiences may be helpful for other women who wish to navigate a similar course:

Curve #1: Network.

It?s important to network in any field, but especially when you?re looking to enter a new industry and meet the experienced professionals who could offer you a job. Because I did not possess a technical background in engineering, science or medicine, nor had I worked in private equity, I knew at the outset of my search that I needed some kind of relevant experience. This began a two-year journey volunteering my sales and marketing services to startups, interacting with angel investors and networking with VCs.

Curve #2: Accept that your big ideas may not be widely accepted.

Have a big idea about how you could change a company, or an industry? Be prepared to face some roadblocks and skepticism. For example, when networking with VCs, I had a premise that I was floating past them ? one which was not readily reciprocated ? that VC firms, regardless of size, should have an internal fundraising/marketing/IR function as a committed member of the team.

As an ?outsider,? common sense may have told me that I ought to follow the lead of the experts in a field that requires such deep levels of technical expertise. For any number of reasons, the experts always seemed to come back to ?It?s just not done that way in VC.?

Curve #3: Don?t give up on your ideas; back them up!

Just because people might not believe in your big idea right away doesn?t mean you should give up. Try thinking differently about your approach and what proof points you can use to support your argument. In my case, my conclusion developed a different twist: ?IR SHOULD be done that way in VC,? and ?Aren?t these guys entrepreneurs?!?

In following my own lead, I continued working my network and connecting with any VC who would listen, telling my story of why all VCs today need in-house IR, and why my skill set from other industries mapped over. In other words: they had a need, and I had a solution. (Note ? For purposes here, I use IR as a term to encompass not just investor relations, but also fundraising, marketing, communications and public relations.)

Curve #4: Know your own personal risks and goals.

What is the end goal for you in entering this new field? Once you have your goals, and potential risks, laid out, this will give you even more motivation to push ahead. One of my primary goals, particularly as a woman, was equity. I believed in the venture capital model of building businesses and fueling the national economy, and I wanted a tangible piece of that.

With this reward, of course, comes risk. Building successful businesses takes time, most businesses don?t succeed, and along the way, I?m not going to be able to retire on the management fees paid during the long haul of the potentially unsuccessful company?s life cycle.

On the other hand, I still saw a no-lose situation quite clearly: I would gain the kind of experience that I simply could not get anywhere else ? the kind that many people seek and never find ? even if the odds were completely against me and not one portfolio company outperformed, which was statistically unlikely.

Eventually, after having boldly engaged my own ?inner entrepreneur,? and after believing in the soundness of my thesis and passionately exercising a whole lot of persistence based upon that, I clicked with a VC team that shared my vision. After performing our respective due diligence on each other, and further investigating my thesis for their firm, we took the entrepreneurial leap together, I came aboard, and we created an in-house IR position.

Just over five years later, we have observed a number of other VC firms doing the same. As a bold early-adopter, we have realized dividends from satisfied limited partners (LPs), and we have impressed prospective LPs with the bold commitments we have made to institutionalize the firm. And best of all? More than one portfolio company has outperformed!

Classification Of Internet Hosting Terms | My Six Strings Blog

So you?ve got outgrown your shared host and it is actually time now to maneuver on with the genuine stuff.

Of course we have been discussing dedicated servers, those byte crunching beasts. Determining most of the possibilities and products and services tends to be very baffling.

But No Fret!

I?ll aim to present you with some secrets and hopefully guidebook in your just right server.

So let?s not waste materials any time and begin with to begin with section.

Precisely what is a Focused Server?
Dedicated Server is really an one laptop linked to the network (online world). This home computer and all of its processing electrical power is committed to a single man or woman or firm. Meaning the machine sources are not shared by everyone else. You possess the complete regulate of your device and you are 100 % free to run any application you wish on that computer system.

Often focused servers are used to serve world wide web site requests ( html, images, films?and so forth) nevertheless they can be used for a lot of other reasons in addition.

Do I want one or more servers?
To simplify items we will divide the use of dedicated servers into both of these groups:

Complete Online site Internet hosting
Precise Service Hosting (Database, electronic mail, httpd?and so forth) Single Website online site Hosting
Hosting of a single or several net web pages. Within this type of set up, many of the services/programs (http program, DB software system, electronic mail application?and many others) are set up and functioning on 1 devoted server. From time to time these services/programs can also be referred as ?servers? them self.

This is the normal setup for smallish to medium trafficked online online websites simply because most of the beneficial computer software required to operate the internet resource site are located on a particular bodily device.

Advantage to of the set up is that it lowers the associated fee, but drawback is the fact each of the machine sources are shared by all the software and processes.

Certain Company Hosting
Hosting of a solitary program or support on its very own focused device. Every one of the assets in the device are devoted predominantly for an individual form of assistance or functionality. As an illustration, just one could very well host only Database Computer software to the server so that each of the resources on that machine are just committed for processing of Database Queries. You?ll be able to manage further queries, or produce much more pages.

Traditionally medium to high trafficked web web sites will run this type of set up.

Traditional setup will include one or more server intended to only handle online (http) ask for, then one or more servers only handling database requests and perhaps a number of servers only managing processing belonging to the e-mails. Theoretically there isn?t a limitation for the volume of servers. Being a group functioning with each other these servers are accustomed to strategy in tens of millions of requests every day.

Which setup would you decide on?
This surely is dependent over the amount of requests and potential customers that the word wide web web site could be acquiring. So for being in a position to reply this query we need to earliest have an understanding of minimal bit about what companies are needed to ensure that web site websites to be accessed via the consumer.

Mostly present day dynamic web web sites will need two biggest support types to deliver an entire doing work internet web site with the user?s browser.

Net SERVERS / Net SCRIPTS ( apache, IIS, php, perl, java )
DATABASE SERVER (MYSQL, MSSQL, ORACLE) Utilization of the word ?servers? inside of the above text is referring to the application / software program rather than into the actual physical machine. This is the regular time period used to describe the sort of application.

World-wide-web server handles every one of the preliminary requests on the browser and decides on how and whereby info on the Database is returned.
Database server handles requests on the net server inside a variety of queries. These queries retrieve data with the storage (really difficult disk) and return it towards the net server.

While you can see both online and database server work collectively to provide the final products (web web site) for the user.

Frequently internet server handles even more with the logic portion so Swifter CPU and larger MEMORY are constantly in desire alot more then Harddrive speed.

While you are database server handles way more of facts retrieval so Quicker Hd and larger MEMORY are almost always in really need additional then cpu speed.

In any case far more memory is often needed:)

It?s important to keep in mind that all of the server software systems normally uses some of the CPU, MEMORY and Troublesome DISK sources. Eventually they begin battling more than the available sources.

One way to stop this battle about the resources would be to different them on to each and every possess focused server.

Another reason to different support styles is the fact that is a lot easier to optimize the machine to run effectively for a single special undertaking then it happens to be for most of the chores.

As an illustration:

Considering that we now understand that Database necessities sooner Rough Drives, possibly we use more costly a lot quicker Exhausting Drives in DB machine, and depart the more cost effective difficult drives on Word wide web devices the place Hd pace is simply not as significant.

But maybe rather we use a lot faster processors on Net machines due to the fact they execute a lot of the logic.

Carrying out it similar to this we?ve got exceptional general performance while not losing means and $$$!

These are generally just basic strategies, and relying for the online internet site and it happens to be features these configurations will change.

Server Attributes and Elements.
Ok since you realize what every (world-wide-web, db) server is hungry for, just how do you understand what elements for getting?

Merely because of the sheer sum of various types and models of each component I might will be needing to write many publications simply to address that subject.

So I?m just intending to provide you with some general guides for every style of part, which whould show you how to on your own upcoming server order.

CPU Pace:
That is a no brainer. A lot more pace (Ghz) that processor has the more quickly it may possibly do the calculations and sooner the webpages are likely to get returned to the consumer.

Some CPU architectures are recognized to accomplish significantly better then some others in server setups so I suggest you need to do some researching on that issue.

Number of CPU Cores / Processors:

An alternative no brainer. A bit more cores or processors your server has, considerably more taks it may do concurrently. Considering that the majority of the steps to the server are dependent on requests and each ask for generally spawns an independent routine, you will notice how more CPU Cores permits the server to deal with a wide range of requests simultaneously.

Amount of RAM:
I think you see the sequence below ?MORE?. Of course that much more RAM your server has, extra requests it could actually take care of at the same time. Cause of that may be that each request calls for specified number of RAM so that it can be processed. This amount is dependent of varied things like: Software applications variety, Running Scheme, Fitted Modules?etc

For example desirable world wide web server software application APACHE might take about 7mb to 15mb of RAM per ask for or progression and that?s not accounting for every other processes now operating or becoming spawned to go with that each ask for.

Memory might be ideal investment decision you may make in your devoted server.

Hard drive RPM pace
All over again the more quickly the disk spins, faster it can get to the data on disk. Some common Har Disk speeds are: 7200RPM, 10000RPM and 15000RPM.

Most important efficiency raise by swifter Complicated Drives may be seen by programs which accessibility the Disk very often. Several of these applications are: Database servers, File Servers and Online video Streaming servers.

SATA vs SCSI vs SAS
Once you had been pondering what these acronyms are connected to, there?re the 3 most typical Hard disk interfaces employed in devoted servers.

Starting from left with SATA getting quite possibly the most reasonably priced but typically not currently being the most beneficial performer. Whilst with SCSI often you receive a lot better general performance then SATA but at substantially greater expenses and by using a great deal significantly less disk room. With SAS you will get superior performance then SCSI and you also get a whole lot more disk place.

Of course there exists considerably more distinctions between these interfaces. Thankfully there may be a lot of content articles around the online world detailing everything. I advise you pay out a while looking into.

Generally unless you are working high Transaction DB server that you?re fine with SATA. And if you?re in the market for better general performance therefore you do not care about the price tag then choose SAS.

To RAID or to not RAID
So indeed we have been nevertheless stuck along with the troublesome drives. While you see a word ?RAID? getting used in the server set up, which means that server has two or even more HD?s joined in an array developing a person rational device. Raid most often gives you heightened storage dependability by using redundancy. There will be completely different RAID setups and you?ve most certainly seen some: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID five, RAID 10?and so forth

Two most typical types you will note in server setups are RAID one and RAID five

Whatever you ought to be familiar with about RAID 0 is the fact that will provide you with some overall performance and improved total disk area but has no redundancy. If one particular push fails, you loose your information.

RAID 1 can provide redundancy by mirroring and in specified scenarios performance enhance, but you do not get elevated disk room. If a particular travel fails you could potentially continue to continue on running and manage to change the damaged push lacking lack of details. This set up needs two Complicated Drives.

RAID 5 offers redundancy and heightened disk place. It demands least on three Difficult drives. Highest of disk room you might have is:(Dimensions of Smallest Generate) * (Range of Drives ? 1). If one particular High definition fails it?s possible to continue to continue on your functions.

RAID is often carried out by using two basic strategies, via software programs or by using hardware.

Software package RAID utilizes Laptop means while Hardware RAID utilizes it can be unique focused source about the card.

You probably have a strong machine then general performance difference between Hardware and Computer software RAID might be negligible

Typically it truly is considered that if available in the market Hardware RAID can be described as more sensible choice.

If in case you have an option to ?RAID? your server, I say go for it, a minimum of RAID 1. Servers are 24hr nonstop workhorses and any interruption because of solitary Disk drive position of failure could lead to serious downtime for your online site.

Bandwidth
Bandwidth may be the phrase utilized to describe the amount of knowledge that server will produce above time period of time. Internet hosting corporations can determine to offer various sorts of pricing structures for expenses of bandwidth.

But some of essentially the most common types are:

Metered Bandwidth
Unmetered Bandwidth Metered bandwidth packages regularly include a number of total of involved bandwidth on a monthly basis and if heading about the involved restrict you?re charged several rate per transferred GB ( GigaByte ) of info.

Unmetered bandwidth offers help you to to transfer just as much while you can in the optimum integrated transfer fee. This maximum transferred price is measured in Mbps ( megabits for each second ).

Each pricing construction sort gives its personal strengths and disadvantages.

With metered bandwidth you as a rule have accessibility to considerably faster connection so your pace can burst approximately the hosting provider?s greatest bandwidth features. This permits the consumer to get a hold of the file quicker if able. As you are billed for every sum of data transfer, you happen to be only restricted to the pace of one?s uplink port.

With unmetered bandwidth you?re constrained (capped) to a number of velocity of your respective link (10Mbps, 50Mbps, 100Mbps?etcetera). Amount of money of data you transfer will not be measured. In nutshell internet hosting business enterprise says here is your max speed therefore you make use of it as many as the max velocity or not, you?re charged one flat rate for that pace.

With metered bandwidth you?ll have to make sure that that total of info transfer integrated per month can in fact be delivered more than an involved uplink port.

One example is: Allows say along with your server you can get six,000 GB of outbound transfer a month but your uplink port velocity is ten Mbps.

With this particular types of uplink velocity if you happen to ended up to repeatedly transfer for a person thirty day period on the maximum pace of 10 Mbps you?d only manage to transfer 3,240 GB of facts. So to fully be capable of implement most of the permitted transfer use you should have to enhance to greater port pace.

Operating Technique
Normally hosting vendors will offer you numerous different types of Working Programs, but almost all of them are grouped into Linux/Unix based and Windows Servers.

OS X Server is often a seriously rear breed to find on devoted servers.

Deciding on an operating structure is generally depending on the standards of software systems, libraries and apps you can be managing in your server.

A number of software programs can be obtained on both of those Linux, Unix and Windows, while you are most people are only to choose from for distinct OS.

Linux based Functioning Solutions are extremely renowned pick because nearly all of them are completely free and traditionally want significantly less methods to run then windows.

Handle Panel
Deal with panels make it possible for for straightforward administration of committed servers. They allow you set up new virtual hosts, domains, e-mail accounts and quite a few other duties that may with out a deal with panel be fluctuate tiresome and difficult to setup.

Some are 100 percent free and open supply but for most of them you are required to fork out. Often compensated kinds include way more elements and help.

Most popular paid ones are: Cpanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin.

Most popular absolutely free kinds are: Virtualmin GPL, W

If you decide to are a newbie with focused servers and also your internet server is unmanaged from the hosting business then I might clearly advise obtaining some kind of control panel put in. It will make your server management simple and easy and you?ll be able to commit the evenings in actual fact sleeping as opposed to striving to determine why your apache server is returning ?500 Internal Server Error?:)

Just one factor to make note of is that some Management Panels take above your OS and embed them self so deep while using the OS that it could make executing setups and installs not supported through the management panel problematic.

Online Internet hosting Support and Management
Managed or Unmanaged?
Many of the Committed Server offers come as ?Managed? or ?Unmanaged?.

With unmanaged servers it?s your obligation to control the server. Which means that putting in and configuring any applications concerning the server falls on you. Unmanaged servers are typically substantially more affordable and if you do not have any ?System Administration? knowledge it can be difficult to handle the server.

A person choice would be to get some sort of manage panel which could make the management within the server easier.

With managed servers accountability of taking care of with the server falls around the internet hosting enterprise. In case you are incredibly new to this all otherwise you tend not to have time to manage it your self then this is certainly your very best bet. Mostly managed servers tend to be costlier. Managed services include varied amounts of management. Ensure that you simply figure out just what exactly is within the administration within your server, some responsibilities or software may not be coated therefore you could perhaps get charged hourly help rates.

Distant Reboot
Is referred to a possibility that permits you to promptly Difficult Reboot your machine. This is more often than not finished by way of website interface and it happens to be beneficial considering that provides you with the deal with to restart the server at your command. From time to time some thing will come about aided by the OS or software system to the server so it crashes or freezes.

This involves the difficult restart belonging to the device (reducing the facility off into the device, and establishing all over again).

If distant reboot isn?t really on the market, you?ll be able to more often than not problem an e-mail ticket or simply call the hosting organisation them self plus they will execute this for your needs. Complication is usually that many times guidance staff might not reach your ticket in an even though, which is why remote reboot comes in helpful.

Technical Assistance
Points do go inappropriate plus they usually take place at the time you least count on. Servers crash, Really hard drives fail, Processors can melt away out and what does one do then? You could be presumably several thousand miles from the server and there?s nothing you?ll personally do. You might be during the palms of specialised guidance.

You will find all kinds of hosting enterprises around, from those operate by an individual individual to all those operate by a huge selection of experienced experts. Some include 24/7 manned cellular phone, chat and e-mail guidance, when some have only minimal electronic mail assist. Watch out when selecting your internet hosting firm, fork out useful notice towards the level of assist they offer and see what exactly is covered. For help that may be not covered as part of your program some hosting establishments cost as large as $150 for each hour. Confirm you read through their SLA (Assistance Stage Arrangement) to see if they offer you any guarantees for just about any down time in addition

Summary
I hope this blog post was equipped to give you some insight inside the world of committed internet hosting and show you how to as part of your choosing of dedicated server.
