Camping is a great activity and can be done with those around you that you love. Yet, many never try it because it sounds so hard to do. As long as you have the information you need ahead of time, camping is very easy. Continue reading this article for some excellent camping tips that will make you an seasoned camper quickly.

Remember that everything you bring will get dirty on your trip. Being prepared for the inevitable is the best way to avoid unneeded stress. Have fun in nature and don't be afraid to get dirty! You can get back to normal after returning home.

Make sure you know how to use a compass and map before you go camping. You can get lost in the woods even if you have been to the area before. You will be able to avoid possible tragedy when you learn how to use both of these life saving items.

After your trip, be certain you leave the campsite cleaner than it was when you found it. You will want to bring trash bags for cleaning up all refuse. Do not leave food there, either. A golden rule for departing a campsite: leave only your footprints behind.

Safety procedures should be acknowledged when you're out camping. Keep away from animals, both large and small. Even small animals in the wild can be dangerous. This should not have to be said, but never feed any bears you see.

Never assume that you will find enough wood to burn, because rain can change that in an instant. Bringing your own small supply of wood and keeping it dry is a wise decision.

Learn how to use a map or a compass before going camping. Even if you know what your campsite is like, you may still get lost because a lot of areas look similar around where you are. You can prevent disaster by knowing how to use these lifesaving items.

Never assume that you will find enough wood to burn, because rain can change that in an instant. It's important that you bring extra wood with you that you can keep in a dry area.

If you have any type of medical issue, no matter how minor, you should always discuss camping with a medical professional beforehand. He or she can tell you about important things you may not have thought about for your trip that can affect your health in a harmful way. Maybe only one small thing needs to be done that won't interfere but will make your camping trip less dangerous for you.

Have you just bought your first tent and want to begin camping? It's vital to learn all that you can before you leave about your tent. You should know what you need and how to do it before you actually have to do it. This will also help you be able to accomplish the task quickly and efficiently once you arrive at your campsite, even if it is near dark.

Find the softest, flattest ground possible to set up your tent. If you pick out a sloped or a rocky spot it can make sleeping and hanging out in the tent very uncomfortable. Also, put a tarp down on your site to repel water in the best fashion.

Buy yourself some camping pillows for your trip. The typical pillows will become sticky in hot and humid climates. The will also pull moisture from the air and mildew will form quickly. Pillows specifically designed for camping will not draw in wetness like regular pillows will.

For a cheap and disposable tarp to place under your tent, save an old shower curtain! You can also use it as a way to control run-off as you are washing or cooking. Instead of getting rid of an old shower curtain, use it for your next camping trip.

Improper food packing leads to food poisoning in many campers each year. Food poisoning can happen when food is spoiled, which is something you risk when you take food not properly preserved, vacuum sealed or canned. Make sure you keep all perishable food on ice, but keep the drain open!

Now that you've reached the end of this article, you are ready to do some planning. Camping is not intended to be an intense event, but there is a bit of know-how required to make it stress free. Use the information shared here and have a great trip!

look 'closely' at the edges on the maple in that stack and you can see that I have an alignment issue on my TS.

I'm trying to figure out Where the problem is though...

when I start a cut, it goes fairly smooth until about 20" into the cut, at which point i need to Both slow down and increase the pressure I'm pushing with... to the point of popping a breaker if I push too hard/fast. taking it slowly, I can get through, but with burnt edges. I've switched blades, both of mine are either 'in dire need of sharpening....' or something is out of whack.

I've checked and as near as I can tell the blade is parallel with the fence, and with the miter slots.

now this is the 'best' evidence I've got that the blade and fence are parallel.. I don't have a gauge, so I've used a square, marking a tooth and measuring distance fore and aft to the miter slot and the fence.

HOwever in mid cut, I'm getting a gap:

and yes, the board itself is straight as near as I can tell.

Kickstarter: Helios, An iPhone Telepresence Rig On A Budget

Another day, another iOS-based telepresence rig. The Helios is a tiny little two-wheeled car that drives around with your iPhone or Touch in the passenger seat, allowing you to move around a scene and interact with remote subjects through the magic of telepresence.

They are raising money through Kickstarter.

Telepresence is a hard nut to crack. People just aren?t that comfortable having a robotic intermediary. But as this generation grows up with video calling and home robotics, I suspect it will be much easier to ? as the above image suggests ? roll out into the park with your SO.

From the creator, Tian Long Wang:

We are currently on the third iteration of Helios. The first model was developed during the Spring 2012 hackathon at Princeton University. This version was built on a trackpad platform by Robotshop and took first place int he hardware category of the hackathon. After some problems with the tracked moving parts, the second version of of Helios was built on the Boebot platform. As our development of the hardware continued, we created the third and current version with the help of SeeedStudio, one of the largest electronics manufacturers in China. The current version employs personal electronic circuits in addition to a completely new body design, manufactured through CNC and 3D plastic printing. For larger volumes, we will use injection molding for all plastic part, which also allows for a glossier look. As outlined, the pricing tiers represent actual manufacturing quotes from SeeedStudio.

The robot will cost $120 when it ships, but early buyers can get it for $99. The project is at $3,000 of a $50,000 pledge request so this might end up in the dustbin of telepresence robot history, but perhaps someone out there will buy 5,000 of them and send entire robot drone armies through the streets of major American cities. A guy can dream?

United Family Services tries to shed light on domestic violence ...

Posted on 28 September 2012.

By DAVID BORAKS
CorneliusNews.net

Among the many social problems the growing lake Norman area faces is one that often hides beneath the surface: domestic violence. But even if you can?t see it, don?t get the idea it?s not there, says Janice, a survivor who now speaks to others about her experience, and where they can find help.

WANT TO HELP? Lake Norman Cruise for Change Oct. 6 raises money for United Family Services and domestic violence programs. See below.

?It?s very easy for people to think it?s an issue that doesn?t affect Lake Norman,? said Janice, who asked that her real name not be used. But, she says, it?s a ?myth? that verbal or physical abuse in relationships doesn?t happen here. ?Nothing in the statistics suggests that is true.?

Janice didn?t really understand she was in an abusive marriage until she was referred to a domestic violence counselor at the nonprofit United Family Services, which has a Lake Norman office in Cornelius.

She thought her husband?s drinking as the problem. ?I thought I had diagnosed him as an alcoholic. .. I was always trying to fix it,? she said in an interview.

She suggested he go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, which he did, but that had the opposite effect. ?It just made everything worse.?

Her husband became increasingly controlling, verbally intimidating, and physically abusive, especially in bed. ?He started harassing me 24/7,? she recalled. At times, ?I felt like driving my car off the bridge.?

She changed jobs several times, and just ?shut down emotionally.? She?d work long hours to avoid coming home.

As the abuse worsened, she found she needed help. ?I had been to other counselors, but they couldn?t figure it out,? Janice said.

Kathryn Firmin-Sellers, Lake Norman region director for UFS, said it?s not unusual for counselors to miss the signs of domestic abuse.

At United Family Services, Janice found help. She started with a group meeting with a half-dozen other women. When she tried to talk to other counselors and other people about her problem, ?It was like speaking Russian and never meeting another Russian.? At the United Family Services group, ?I was in a room with people who spoke my language.?

Her husband ?made me think that I was crazy,? she said. But now, three years after she left and got help, she now understands she?s not alone, and help is available.

And now that she?s out speaking to others, she wants people to know that domestic violence is a real problem ? not one to be hidden or dismissed. Nationally, she said, it is estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 boys are victims of sexual assault or intimate partner violence, she says, rattling off statistics.

About 75 percent of women are victimized before they graduate from high school, she said.

In the Lake Norman area, United Family Services and the towns of Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville have joined forces to hire a domestic violence victim advocate. In the first year, according to Ms. Firmin-Sellers, the advocated helped just under 200 people. About half were domestic violence cases, one-quarter sexual assaults, and one-quarter child abuse.

?It?s among the most underreported crimes,? Ms. Firmin-Sellers said.

United Family Services is joining the nationwide effort to spread the word during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The Cruise for Change on Oct. 6 is part of that work, as well as a way to help pay for the services UFS provides.

Meanwhile, town boards throughout the area are issuing their own proclamations recognizing the month and promoting greater awareness.

WHERE TO GET HELP

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, you can find support at United Family Services. The nonprofit organization offers counseling, a battered women?s shelter, and domestic violence victim services ? to help navigate the legal system. This year, UFS started a Domestic Violence Support Group. Find out more at www.unitedfamilyservices.org/ For specific information about the organization?s Lake Norman area services, visit http://www.unitedfamilyservices.org/mooresville-lake-norman/

HOW YOU CAN HELP?

United Family Services, which is based in Charlotte and has an office Cornelius, will host its annual Cruise for Change on Saturday, Oct. 6, to raise money for its domestic violence programs. The cruise is 6:30 to 10 p.m., departing from Queens Landing in Mooresville. The cost is $60 per person, including heavy hors d?oeuvres, a 1-hour open bar, dancing, a silent auction and a drawing for an iPad. Buy tickets at unitedfamilyservices.org. Baltimore museum has strong case in Renoir theft

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An expert on art thefts says the Baltimore Museum of Art likely has a strong case to reclaim a Renoir painting that was stolen in 1951 and turned up recently at a West Virginia flea market.

Former FBI investigator Robert Wittman says the painting's dimensions and composition are key in matching it to a stolen piece.

A woman bought the painting for $7 at the flea market and it was expected to fetch $75,000 at a now-postponed auction.

Museum officials were combing through paper records Friday to learn more about the theft nearly 61 years ago. So far, they have found a record documenting the painting was on loan from art patron Saidie A. May.

It's the only record they've found of the painting being stolen while on exhibition.

Unusual Indian Ocean Earthquakes Hit at Tectonic Breakup

April 2012 quakes occurred away from plate edges, suggesting formation of a new boundary

seismology map At least four faults within the Indo-Australian plate ruptured simultaneously in April 2012, resulting in two magnitude-8 earthquakes within two hours. (Red stars indicate the epicentres.) Image: Keith Koper, University of Utah Seismograph Stations

By Helen Shen of Nature magazine

A pair of massive earthquakes that rocked the Indian Ocean on 11 April 2012 may signal the latest step in the formation of a new plate boundary within Earth?s surface.

Geological stresses rending the Indo-Australian plate apart are likely to have caused the magnitude-8.6 and magnitude-8.2 quakes, which broke along numerous faults and unleashed aftershocks for 6 days afterwards, according to three papers published online today in Nature.

Seismologists have suspected since the 1980s that the Indo-Australian plate may be breaking up. But the 11 April earthquakes represent ?the most spectacular example? of that process in action, says Matthias Delescluse, a geophysicist at the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure in Paris and lead author of the first paper. Worldwide, ?it?s the clearest example of newly formed plate boundaries,? he says.

According to prevailing theories of plate tectonics, the Indo-Australian plate began to deform internally about 10 million years ago. As the plate moved northwards, the region near India crunched against the Eurasian plate, thrusting the Himalayas up and slowing India down. Most scientists think that the Australian portion forged ahead, creating twisting tensions that are splitting the plate apart in the Indian Ocean.

Delescluse and his team inferred the presence of these seismic stresses by modeling stress changes from shortly before the 2012 earthquakes. They found that two earlier earthquakes along the eastern plate boundary ? the magnitude-9.1 tremor in 2004 that unleashed a massive tsunami across the Indian Ocean, and another quake in 2005 ? probably triggered the 2012 event by adding to pent-up stresses in the plate?s middle region.

Gregory Beroza, a seismologist at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, says that the model is a likely explanation. ?The 2004 and 2005 earthquakes by themselves would not have caused this other earthquake. There had to be other stresses,? he says.
Slip-sliding away

Most large earthquakes occur when two plates collide at their boundaries, and one plate slides beneath the other. By contrast, when plates or portions of plates slip horizontally along a fault line, this usually results in smaller, 'strike-slip' earthquakes.

However, the first 11 April event defied expectations as the largest strike-slip earthquake on record, and one of the strongest to occur away from any conventional plate boundaries.

In the second study, researchers found that the accumulated stresses spread over the plate?s interior broke free in the first 11 April event, resulting in one of the most complex fault patterns ever observed. Unlike most earthquakes that shake along a single fault, this one ruptured along four faults, one of which slipped as much as 20?30 meters.

?This earthquake, it was a ?gee whiz?,? says study author Thorne Lay, a seismologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Previous work had already identified multiple strike-slip faults for the magnitude-8.6 earthquake, but no other study had analyzed the slip amounts in such detail. Beroza says that Lay and his team ?do a splendid job of picking apart this very important earthquake? in their paper.

Lasting impressions
Although much attention has focused on how the earthquakes played out, some researchers are also studying the after-effects of the giant tremor. In a third study, scientists found that for six days following the event, earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 and greater occurred at almost five times their normal rate all around the world.

?Aftershocks are usually restricted to the immediate vicinity of a main shock,? says lead author Fred Pollitz, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California. He says that the 11 April example should challenge conventional definitions of how soon and how close aftershocks can occur to large earthquakes.

?Every earthquake is important to study, but this earthquake is rather unique,? says Hiroo Kanamori, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. With so many unusual characteristics to examine, the 11 April earthquake sequence may continue for some time to expand researchers? ideas of how earthquakes can occur.

Searching for sanity in NFL pre-game shows: part 3, NBC - SB Nation

Where does NBC's pre-game show score on the studio sabermetrics?

Every year, much is written about the broadcasting of National Football League games, which change timeslots and networks and draw various large amounts of viewers. Not much, however, is written about something that rarely ever changes during the NFL season: pre-game shows. Every Tuesday for the first four weeks of the season, we'll review one of the five major football networks' pre-game shows.

Hey, internet! Want to hear some depressing numbers? Football Night in America, which airs in a TV dead zone (7 p.m. ET on Sundays) and in a timeslot that already features way too much football (4 p.m. ET games almost never wrap up by 7 p.m., plus highlight shows on NFL Network, ESPN, etc.) draws higher ratings than literally every one of the internet's favorite NBC shows. That's right, the 2.6 demo rating for Football Night was higher than the season premieres of Parks and Recreation, The Office, Up All Night, that weird Thursday edition of Saturday Night Live, and almost every episode of Community. I told you this would be depressing.

Pre-game show reviews: CBS | FOX

Anywho, I thought I'd put that statistic out there because very little is ever written about the show in comparison to Fox's Hollywood disaster film version of a pre-game, ESPN's 500 talking heads, and CBS' bore show. Maybe it's because a lot of the people covering football are all watching actual football up until about 8 p.m. ET. However, until NBC Sports Network debuts their own morning pre-game show in 2014, this is all they've got. Maybe -- as is the case with a lot of long running shows -- it's a difficult show to nitpick because it is the rare pre-game show that's... gulp... good? Let's dive in to last night's broadcast and see.

PSER

Everything in sports is chopped up into statistics nowadays, and every statistic is made into a catchy acronym. The best we could do was PSER (Pre-game Show Efficiency Rating). It sounds kinda football-ish, right? Anyway, PSER is based on a rating of 1-10 in five categories: Host Usefulness (HU), Quality of Banter Rating (QB Rating), Bloated Promotions (BP), Actual News Gathering (ANG) and Impact Rating (IR).

Host Usefulness NBC is kind of disqualified from this category, because they have two hosts: Bob Costas live from the site of the game, and Dan Patrick live from 30 Rock. It's a long show, so neither really finds themselves lacking for screen time (don't forget, this show used to have threehosts before Keith Olbermann got fired for 94th time) but it does make for a bit of a bipolar broadcast, even tripolar when Mike Florio and Peter King do their segments. Score: 3

QB Rating The banter on Football Night is probably as natural as it's going to get on NFL TV. Dungy, as righteous as he often comes off, has found a way to speak to viewers like they're adults. His rapport with Rodney Harrison and Patrick is fairly easy-going. Costas, Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and newcomer Hines Ward also have a pretty easy chemistry. It shows off the embarrassment of riches NBC displays. It also speaks to the difference between this show and the Sunday pre-game shows, in that they have actual football results to talk to. But they mix in that -- as well as previews of the night game -- quite well. The forced laughter is often there a bit -- and Patrick's old SportsCenter schtick is as stale as it gets while doing highlights -- but this is a fairly tolerable collection of personalities. Score: 7

Bloated Promotions A lot of NBC's promotional efforts are in service of NBC Sports Network, including a full segment flat out ripped from an NBCSN show in NFL Turning Point. Florio's presence on the show itself is a commercial for his Pro Football Talk show on the network. The cross-promoting is largely non-existant or invasive, however, minus the typical sponsorships.Score: 6

Actual News Gathering An unfair advantage NBC has over the other networks, but they use that advantage. It doesn't hurt having King and Florio, who are excellent at news gathering. Again, NBC has outdone the other networks, using two insiders. When they get into opinion it can be a little much, but when it comes to getting breaking news, these two are the best on TV. Score: 10

Impact Rating NBC's pre-game did something that the other pre-game shows haven't done yet: they stayed with me hours after I tuned in. Between Ward's reminiscing of how he was treated in Baltimore to Rodney Harrison's interview with the entertaining Rob Gronkowski. NBC brings a pageantry to sports broadcasting that isn't seen elsewhere (perhaps CBS on occasion), and that extends quite nicely to Football Night, which is easily the best I've seen of the pre-game shows this season. Score: 8

Overall PSER: 6.80

Current PSER Rankings:
1. Football Night in America (NBC) - 6.80
2. The NFL Today (CBS) - 5.203. Fox NFL Sunday (Fox) - 4.20

Car Rental Kuwait: Helping You Understand This Gulf Country in a ...

An oasis of oddity precisely set-up in the most litigated regions of the world, Kuwait has dauntlessly maintained its head high in spite of many epidemics. A bassinet of lion-hearted civilization against the entourage of sand and oil fields, this is a prominent Arabian country bordering Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the Arabian Gulf. The country?s transport system is manageable, but it?s always advisable to go for the car rental Kuwait. This is a small country and can be easily covered by roads. What can be more interesting that going on a scenic road trip?

The capital city, Kuwait City is the most prominent town of this nation and in recent years, it has witnessed a steady growth in its tourism department, thereby drawing considerable amount of tourists every year. While some arrive here on a vacation trip, others here on business trips. No matter whatever your purpose of visit is, but you?re indeed going to look for a comfortable stay followed by a cost-effective travel option, which is car hire Kuwait. While the copious hotels and vacation rentals of this city can give you a great choice to check-in, the city?s travel agencies, some of which are also located near and within the airports can help you solve your conveyance problem. It is intensely hot during summer, but offers a relatively warm climate in September and October. A major part of this nation is dominated by desert, thereby making it aloof from archaeological significance. But it is its oil industry, which is the very backbone of the country?s backbone and thus, it is home to 10% of the world?s richest people.

While this country was quite familiar in the world, it was perhaps the Gulf War which made Kuwait a household name in the late 20th century. By 1961, this Arabian nation had established itself as an independent and one of the world?s leading exporters of oil. Because of its oil fields, the country was attacked by Iraq, leading to the subsequent Persian Gulf War which ended finally in 1991. However, the country has managed to emerge quickly, spending billion dollars to renovate its infrastructure, which were damaged during the war. Today it maintains its status proudly as being a leading oil magnet. The Kuwait Towers are the most significant attractions and were set-up in 1975. Mary Edwards Walker: Above and Beyond | Psychology Today

Faced with what is right, to leave it undone shows a lack of courage. ? Confucius

I have been writing a scholarly paper on recipients of the Medal of Honor ? aka the Congressional Medal of Honor* ? which is the highest award for bravery that can be given to someone in the US Armed Forces. Since 1863, it has been awarded to 3400+ individuals. In all cases, the person performed an extraordinary deed entailing risk of life above and beyond the call of duty, usually in armed action against an opposing force. At least in recent decades, most Medals of Honor have been awarded posthumously because the recipients died while performing the heroic deed that earned the award.

In my paper, I referred to the recipients collectively as ?men? but then fretted that maybe I was wrong. The popular movie Courage Under Fire notwithstanding, maybe some women had received the Medal of Honor, and the least I could do was to include them in my generalizations.

As I quickly discovered upon consulting Wikipedia, a woman (one) had been awarded the Medal of Honor: Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919), usually identified as a Union Civil War surgeon. She was born in Oswego, New York, in a family without sons. Her father expected his daughters to do a man?s work on the family farm, and they all did.

It is unclear whether she attended college, but at age 21, Mary Edwards Walker enrolled at Syracuse Medical College, one of the few schools in the United States that admitted female students. Tuition was $55 per term, and room and board in a dormitory was $1.50 per week. In 1855, after eighteen months of study, she earned her medical degree.

Dr. Walker had difficulty establishing an independent medical practice, and when the Civil War began, she volunteered her services to the Union Army and cared for wounded Soldiers on both sides of the conflict and their family members. After crossing battle lines, she was taken prisoner of war and served time in a Confederate prison. In 1865, she received the Medal of Honor. In 1917, it was rescinded (as were hundreds of others that had been awarded) because she was a civilian and ? strictly speaking ? her acts of bravery did not occur in the context of combat. However, her Medal was restored in 1977.

Intrigued by what I had read about Mary Edwards Walker, I wanted to learn more. I located an out-of-print biography of Dr. Walker, subtitled Above And Beyond. It was written by historian Dale L. Walker (2005). I took the step of actually buying the book because I thought (incorrectly, as it turned out) that the author might have been a descendant of Dr. Walker. Maybe he had some inside information about her and her life.

To my regret, the author had no inside information, for which I do not fault him. He was honest in noting that historical records were scant, and he did not try to fill in the blanks by making things up or extrapolating. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Dr. Walker was apparently not a prolific letter writer, and she did not keep a regular journal. What is known about her comes from official documents, letters by others that mentioned her, and newspaper stories**.

Another reason for the lack of information about Dr. Walker is that she may have been a spy for the Union Army and sworn to secrecy, a promise that if made was kept until her death. Historical records are not clear, although it is known that in 1864, she was arrested by Confederate forces, charged as a spy, and held in a Richmond prison until released in a prisoner exchange, a fact that supposedly amused her because the exchange signified that she was, at last, regarded as the equal of a man.

In any event, what the author of Dr. Walker?s biography did well was to depict the historical era in which she lived. Three things in particularly have stuck with me. First was the incredible difficulty faced by women in the 1800s, especially those who departed from what was expected. Women could not vote. Women could not easily acquire higher education, including medical education. And for those women who did earn a medical degree, acceptance by their male peers was almost impossible. So, although Dr. Walker tended to the ill and wounded throughout the Civil War, her appointment as a surgeon or even a surgeon?s assistant was strongly opposed by members of the medical establishment. She was not even paid for what she did except at the very end of the war.

Second was that when people in the mid-1800s communicated with those who were not in their immediate vicinity, they usually did so by letter. Or they took trips to see those with whom they wanted to talk. These trips could take days or even weeks. Contrast these practices with the modern world and its cell phones, e-mails, Facebook pages, and Skype calls. Despite what would seem to us formidable barriers to communication. Dr. Walker was in contact with such well-known individuals as Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Dorothea Dix, Susan B. Anthony, and Frederick Douglas, among others.

Third was the incredible loss of life of combatants in the Civil War. Between 1861 and 1865, some 650,000 American Soldiers (on both sides) lost their lives, about 300 fatalities per day and totaling almost 2% of the entire United States population at the time. This number exceeds the US combat deaths in each of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror. Many deaths during the Civil War occurred as physicians tried to treat the wounded. One of the practices was the routine amputation of damaged limbs, a practice against which Dr. Walker argued but to little effect. History proved her correct: Amputation should be a last resort and not something automatically done. Other innovations championed by Dr. Walker were a diet of fruits and vegetables, regular physical exercise, and strict cleanliness.

The biography of Dr. Walker was more of an appetizer than an entr?e, but it was a tantalizing one. Dr. Walker was one interesting and important individual who deserves much more attention from history than she seems to receive. Her life was indeed above and beyond.

* Because the award is given ?in the name of Congress,? it is often called the Congressional Medal of Honor, but the actual name is simply the Medal of Honor.

** Indeed, newspaper stories about her were rather frequent because she attracted attention, not only for her accomplishments as a physician and as an activist promoting numerous causes from abolition to prohibition to family welfare to women?s suffrage but also because of the physical appearance she deliberately chose. Believing that the clothing typically worn by women of her era ? corsets, petticoats, and hoop skirts -- were not only constraining but unhygienic and unhealthy, she opted to wear clothing of her own design, typically trousers under a long-sleeved, high-necked, loose-waisted dress that fell just below her knees. She was often described as wearing men?s clothing ? which was hardly accurate ? and even arrested several times for supposedly so doing. But as she frequently said, ?I don?t wear men?s clothes. I wear my own clothes.? Even today, in a world that is more evolved in many ways, the attire of a powerful woman attracts attention in a way that the attire of a powerful man does not. Think Hillary Clinton and her well-chronicled pants suits. Plus ?a change, plus c'est la m?me chose. [The more things change, the more they stay the same.}

Dallas boy, 4, inspiration for photo project, dies - FOX19.com ...

By TERRY WALLACE
Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) - Colleagues of Dyrk Burcie's firefighter dad organized photos with the 4-year-old's name and a message to cheer up the boy and his family as he fought cancer.

Dyrk's battle with the disease ended Monday morning with him dying peacefully at the family's home in Dallas, his father said.

Dyrk was "1 of the happiest kids you could ever find," Dameon Burcie said of his son.

The boy was just 3 when a mass was detected on his abdomen. Doctors diagnosed him with pediatric liver cancer and later found the cancer had spread to both of his lungs.

Dyrk underwent nine rounds of chemotherapy and a liver transplant. "The last few weeks, he had some discomfort with all of his surgeries and chemotherapy," his father said.

In April, Burcie posted on Facebook that the family had decided to stop intensive treatment and make the most of the time Dyrk had left. Family friend and fellow Dallas firefighter Ronnie Roe talked to other firefighters about sending Dyrk photos of them posing with signs emblazoned with the boy's name.

The Dallas firefighters' photo project caught on with crews at other fire departments, who also posted images on a Facebook page devoted to the child.

One photo showed Dyrk's name spelled in fire. A crew in the East Texas city of Longview, about 125 miles east of Dallas, spelled out his name in hay before adding a mix of oil and liquid detergent and setting fire to it. 1 of the firefighters climbed a nearly 100-foot-tall ladder to snap the picture.

In College Station, about 90 miles northwest of Houston, firefighters posed in front of 2 trucks with their cabs tilted forward. Two logos from the "Transformers" action figures - Dyrk's favorite - were digitally added.

Others joined the effort to boost Dyrk's spirits, including youth sports teams, families and active-duty soldiers.

"It was absolutely incredible," Burcie said of the response. "Dyrk would ask almost every day if he could see the pictures that had been posted that day."

The boy's funeral is scheduled for Friday at First Baptist Church of Midlothian. He will be buried at Mount Zion Cemetery near Midlothian, 30 miles southwest of Dallas.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burcie family," Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said in an email. "Dyrk's resilience, and smile, has taught us all a lesson in how to approach every day of our lives; and for that he will forever be in our hearts."

US panel approves NC uranium enrichment plant

(AP) ? A nuclear power partnership of General Electric Co. and Tokyo-based Hitachi Ltd. received federal approval Tuesday to build the first plant to enrich uranium for use in commercial reactors using a classified laser technology.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a license to General Electric-Hitachi Global Laser Enrichment LLC to build and operate a uranium enrichment plant near Wilmington deploying the laser technology instead of costlier centrifuges.

Nuclear weapons control advocates fear that allowing companies to use the cheaper and easier technology could increase the risk it falls into the wrong hands.

"We think the approval of the license was done without due consideration of proliferation," said Edwin Lyman, a senior scientist in the global security program of the Union of Concerned Scientists. "We're already grappling with how to cope with Iran's nuclear enrich capability" and the laser technology "could make the problem intractable and uncontrollable."

GE Hitachi said it hasn't yet decided whether the project will be profitable enough to launch construction of the $1 billion plant. Part of the evaluation will be weighing whether markets for enriched uranium will hold for years into the future, spokesman Christopher White said.

But the company assured its hold on the classified technology proposed by the Australian company Silex Systems is secure.

"The company has worked with the NRC, the U.S. departments of State and Energy and independent non-proliferation experts for several years to ensure the security of this technology and has met ? and in many cases exceeded ? all regulations pertaining to safeguarding this technology," GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy said in a statement.

The NRC license allows GE Hitachi to enrich uranium to 8 percent by weight. Uranium is enriched to 90 percent purity to build atomic bombs.

The United States and five other world powers have imposed sanctions on Iran because it has enriched uranium to 20 percent, a level that could be turned into weapons-grade material much more quickly than power-plant fuel.

The technology could enhance America's energy security because a majority of enriched uranium made to fuel the country's 104 operating nuclear reactors comes from foreign or government-aided sources, the company said.

"It could provide a steady supply of uranium enriched right here in the U.S. to the country's nuclear reactors," Global Laser Enrichment chief executive officer Chris Monetta said. "These reactors provide approximately 20 percent of the nation's electricity today and will continue to be an important part of the energy mix for decades to come."

The NRC said it would conduct inspections during the plant's construction and operation and hold a public meeting in Wilmington before construction begins to explain its oversight plans.

Ford workers ratify contract

Report an error

Members of the Canadian Auto Workers union have voted 82% in favour of a new four-year collective agreement with Ford.

The final count came in around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon after 4,500 Ford employees were asked to vote on the proposal in ratification meetings taking place in Hamilton, Windsor and Brampton.

It?s the first victory in battles with the ?Big Three? automakers, the union said, with General Motors and Chrysler still trailing.

?I?m satisfied,? said CAW national president Ken Lewenza after the results were announced. ?To have over 80% of the membership support the bargaining committee and support our objectives, quite frankly, is inspiring. We still have lots of work to do.?

The new contract reached on Sept. 17 will create 635 new jobs in Canada over the term of the agreement. The Ford Oakville Assembly Complex will see a third shift in body, paint and pre-trim divisions resulting in 230 jobs, along with additional changes creating approximately 300 jobs.

At the Windsor plant, there are 35 more jobs expected to be created.

However, the deal reduces the pay and benefit for new hires ? something Lewenza noted was the best they could negotiate based on the current shaky economic climate. However, it is not a two-tiered wage system, which the union fought vehemently against.

New hires will start at a lower pay rate and it will take longer ? 10 years instead of six ? to reach the current top wage of $34 per hour. The new employees will also have a different pension plan combining some defined benefits with defined contributions.

Lewenza said there is an immediate signing bonus of $3,000 for employees who worked throughout 2012, followed by $2,000 for each of the three years after. Ford is also providing a cost of living bonus in the last quarter of the fourth year.

Ford called the deal a way of ?significant cost-savings? for the company.

?By becoming more competitive in our labour costs, we are better positioned to support the growth of the Canadian economy and to provide new job opportunities,? said Stacey Allerton, Ford?s lead negotiator.

?For every auto job in Canada, multiple supporting jobs are created, and both the company and our employees view that opportunity and responsibility very seriously.?

The CAW represents 21,500 members at Ford, Chrysler and GM.

Next up ? unionized GM employees are scheduled to vote on their contract Wednesday and Thursday, after the CAW reached an agreement with the automaker last Thursday. Talks with Chrysler are ongoing.

iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 4S vs. iPhone 3GS vs. iPhone design gallery

The iPhone 5 Apple's 6th version, and 4th major design revision, of the iPhone. It might well have been inevitable, and still be working its way towards Jonathan Ive's Platonic ideal, but it's also a fascinating visual evolution of case shrinking, screen lengthening, and materials improving over generations.

We've done the iPhone 5 in both stunning portrait, and in intimate macro. Here's the Darwinian march of iPhone designs through the years, from the original 2007 iPhone to the 2009 iPhone 3GS to the 2011 iPhone 4S to the brand new 2012 iPhone 5.

MMA Marketplace: Battle of the UFC 152 walkout shirts

It's time to break down UFC 152's main event via the most important factor: walkout shirts. Sure, Vitor Belfort is a historic underdog and is not expected to last long in the fight against UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, but what do the shirts say? Let's see.

On the left, Vitor Belfort's shirt by RVCA. It's available in green and white and you can buy it straight from RVCA for $29.95.

On the right, we have Jones' shirt ... maybe? Here's the deal. Jones is now sponsored by Nike, and he tweeted out this "Bones Knows" Nike shirt before UFC 151 was canceled. According to the tweet:

#Nike only made 80 signature T-shirts for UFC 151, I absolutely cannot wait to bless my fans, talk about #exclusive

So, there were only 80 shirts made, but it's not 100 percent clear on how to get them. Nike's online store doesn't have them or any mention of Jones. If you want to buy gear from Jones now, take a look at his UFC store online which has items from his last fight.

By virtue of pretty green color and the ease in buying the shirt, Belfort wins. Tune in Saturday to see if that pans out.
