Russia's 'Pussy Riot' on trial for cathedral protest

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Three women who protested against Vladimir Putin in a "punk prayer" on the altar of Russia's main cathedral went on trial on Monday in a case seen as a test of the longtime leader's treatment of dissent during a new presidential term.

The women from the band "Pussy Riot" face up to seven years in prison for an unsanctioned performance in February in which they entered Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral, ascended the altar and called on the Virgin Mary to "throw Putin out!"

Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, were brought to Moscow's Khamovniki court for Russia's highest-profile trial since former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky was convicted for a second time in 2010, in the same courtroom.

Supporters chanted "Girls, we're with you!" and "Victory!" as the women, each handcuffed by the wrist to a female officer, were escorted from police van into the courthouse.

"We did not want to offend anybody," Tolokonnikova said from the same metal and clear-plastic courtroom cage where Khodorkovsky sat with his business partner during their trial.

"Our motives were exclusively political."

The stunt was designed to highlight the close relationship between the dominant Russian Orthodox Church and former KGB officer Putin, then prime minister, whose campaign to return to the presidency in a March election was backed clearly, if informally, by the leader of the church, Patriarch Kirill.

The protest offended many believers and left the church leadership incensed. The church, which has enjoyed a big revival since the demise of the Communist Soviet Union in 1991 and is seeking more influence on secular life, cast the performance as part of a sinister campaign by "anti-Russian forces".

The women, who have been charged with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility, have said many times they meant no offence.

ANGER OVER CLOSE CHURCH-STATE TIES

In opening statements read by a defence lawyer, who sometimes struggled with the handwritten texts, they said they were protesting against Kirill's political support for Putin and had no animosity toward the church or the faithful.

"I have never had such feelings towards anyone in the world," Tolokonnikova said in her statement, describing the charge of religious hatred as "wildly harsh".

"We are not enemies of Christianity. The opinion of Orthodox believers is important to us and we want all of them to be on our side - on the side of anti-authoritarian civil activists," she said.

"Our performance contained no aggression toward the public - only a desperate desire to change the situation in Russia for the better."

Pussy Riot burst onto the scene this winter with angry lyrics and surprise performances, including one on Red Square outside the Kremlin, that went viral on the Internet.

The band members see themselves as the avant-garde of a disenchanted generation looking for creative ways to show its dissatisfaction with Putin's 12-year dominance of the political landscape.

"I thought the church loved all its children, but it seems the church loves only those children who love Putin," Alyokhina's statement said.

The women looked thinner and paler than they did when they were jailed following the performance in late February, shortly before Putin, in power as president from 2000-2008 and then as prime minister, won a six-year presidential term on March 4.

"She looks like she has been on a long hunger strike," Stanislav Samutsevich said of his daughter.

"I think this is like an inquisition, like mockery."

A reporter on state-run TV presented a different picture, focusing on occasional smiles and chuckles, by the women, who whispered to each other as a prosecutor read the charges.

"Look at their faces; they are laughing and joking," the reporter said on the news, adding that a viewer might think they were "continuing the action" they carried out at the cathedral.

Prosecutors asked for the trial, which was streamed live on the Internet, to be closed to the public and the media, saying a "rift in society" and emotions over the case put the defendants and other participants at risk.

The judge rejected the motion but ordered live streaming shut off during witness testimony and some other proceedings.

A group of conservative Russian writers called on Monday for tough punishment. Kremlin opponents, rights activists and the defendants say the charges are politically motivated.

The prosecution marked "the start of a campaign of authoritarian, repressive measures aimed to ... spread fear among politically active citizens," Samutsevich said in her statement, read out by defence lawyer Violetta Volkova.

PROTEST MOVEMENT

The performance was part of a lively protest movement that at its peak saw 100,000 people turn out for rallies in Moscow, some of the largest in Russia since the Soviet Union's demise.

The prosecution dismissed accusations of political motives.

"This is not a question of our parliamentary or presidential elections, but a criminal case about ... banal hooliganism with a religious motive," said Larisa Pavlova, who represents Lyubov Sokologorskaya, one of several people who work at the cathedral and are appearing at the trial as "victims" of Pussy Riot.

Sokologorskaya, who described herself as a "profound believer", said only clerics were allowed at the altar and that the defendants' bare shoulders, short skirts and "aggressive" dance moves violated church rules and offended the faithful.

"When I talk about this event, my heart hurts. It hurts that this is possible in our country," she said. "Their punishment must be adequate so that never again is such a thing repeated."

The trial comes as Putin, who is 59 and has not ruled out seeking another term in 2018, tries to forestall potential challenges and rein in opponents who hope to reignite the street protest movement this autumn.

On Monday, Putin signed a law enacting stricter punishment for defamation. That follows recent laws tightening controls on foreign-funded civil rights groups and sharply raising fines for violations of public order at street rallies.

Opposition leaders including anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny and socialite Ksenia Sobchak have had their homes searched and faced repeated rounds of questioning over violence at a protest on the eve of Putin's inauguration on May 7.

Lawyers for Navalny say investigators are preparing to charge him, in a separate case, with a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. He was summoned to the federal Investigative Committee on Monday but told to return on Tuesday.

Amnesty International said the Pussy Riot performers "must be released immediately" and that the prison terms they face if convicted are "wildly out of all proportion."

"They dared to attack the two pillars of the modern Russian establishment - the Kremlin and the Orthodox Church," regional programme director John Dalhuisen said in a statement.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev dismissed criticism of the case in remarks published on Monday, saying the trial was a "serious ordeal" for the defendants and their families but that "one should be calm about it" and await the outcome.

Whether the group's performance crossed the line from a "moral misdemeanour" to a crime was "up to the court to decide," Medvedev, in London for the Olympics, told the Times newspaper in an interview posted on the Russian government website.

Few Russians believe the country's courts are independent, however, and Medvedev acknowledged during his 2008-2012 presidency that they were subject to political pressure.

"The court's decision will depend not on the law but on what the Kremlin wants," said Lyudmila Alexeyeva, a veteran human rights activist who heads the Moscow Helsinki Group.

Troops & students at Olympics for free

LONDON (AP) -- Organizing chief Sebastian Coe says troops and local students will be given tickets to fill empty seats at Olympic venues.

There has been widespread criticism after blocks of prime seats went unused Saturday, largely by Olympic and sports officials. Coe, head of the London organizers, predicts this will be sorted out as the games go forward.

He declines to blame Olympic sponsors, whom he had promised to "name and shame" if they did not use their ticket allocations. Coe says it is normal at the Olympics for national team officials to be too busy to attend events in the opening days.

Coe's organizing team has long promised to fill venues, avoiding the problem of empty seats at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Pros and Cons of Online Tutoring

Internet infrastructure has developed to a point that it has become extremely easy and convenient to hire an online tutor. This option usually presents itself as a dilemma to parents looking to hire a tutor for their child. While it is easy to presume that live teaching can in no way match the experience of having the teacher physically present, the experience actually varies depending on the student?s age, his/her comfort with technology, the subject taught and the experience levels of the educator. Let?s take a look at some of the pros and cons of online tutoring in more detail.

PROS:

a) Online tutoring eliminates the need to travel for either the student or the educator. This not only saves time, but also money, making live coaching far more cost efficient.

b) Older students accustomed to Internet technologies will generally find online mentoring more comfortable than home coaching.

c) Evolution of software technologies has reached such a point that, an educator could write, dictate, speak or draw in real time while the student watches. The mentor too, is able to view the student?s work real time. This real time face-to-face interaction maintains a personal touch to teaching, while the distance assures the parents the safety of their kids.

d) Recording is possible when it comes to one-on-one lessons, this enables the student to visit back on any of the older lessons for more efficient revisions. These recordings can also provide a valuable insight to parents about the quality of the lessons provided.

e) Finally live tutoring provides a lot of flexibility with timings, content of the subject, quality of the teacher etc. Since distance is never an issue, a good instructor is easier to find.

CONS:

a) No matter how you look at it, live tutoring keeps the student physically away from the teacher, allowing for mischievous or unruly behaviour.

b) Lack of quality Internet access can severely hamper the quality of online teaching. Other than this, software compatibility issues, user experience in dealing with computers etc. can have a negative impact on the quality of education.

c) Students participating in such programs might simply email each other and chat online since distances involved make it impossible to physically meet. This might hamper social skills in young children.

As with most things, live coaching might be a good thing or a bad thing. It is up to you to gauge the personality of your child and the value of a given tutor, and decide if online is the way to go or not.

There are numerous pros and cons of online tutoring, but if you want to hire an expert ok tutor you should thoroughly search for him. And remember: there is no shame in getting a tutor!

Next Space Station Crew to Try 'Fishy' Science

When the next Russian-built Soyuz capsule launches to the International Space Station in October, it will deliver three new crewmembers to the orbiting outpost. But the trio of spaceflyers will be sharing their ride with some special cargo: 32 small fish for a science experiment at the space lab.

NASA astronaut Kevin Ford and Russian cosmonauts Evgeny Tarelkin and Oleg Novitskiy are scheduled to launch to the International Space Station on Oct. 15 from the Baikonour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Their Soyuz TMA-06M capsule will also be carrying 32 medaka fish ? a type of fish native to Southeast Asia ? to the orbiting complex.

"They'll be on our Soyuz with us ? 32 fish, plus the three of us," Ford told reporters in a news briefing Thursday (July 26).

The medakas will become part of an experiment carried out on the station to investigate the effects of microgravity on fish. The astronauts aboard the outpost will monitor changes in the fish as they live in orbit. [7 Everyday Things that Happen Strangely In Space]

"When we come onboard, one of the first items will be to get these fish transferred and into their habitat and get the experiment underway," Ford explained.

The fish will stay in a special aquatic habitat that is being delivered to the space station by a robotic Japanese cargo freighter. The Japanese unmanned H-2 Transfer Vehicle-3, or HTV-3, launched into orbit on July 20, and arrived at the space station today (July 27).

Scientists are particularly interested in how the skeletal systems of fish change in the near weightless environment aboard the space station, said Julie Robinson, an International Space Station program scientist.

It has long been known that exposure to microgravity for extended periods of time can carry negative consequences, including loss of muscle and bone density. To prevent lasting harmful effects, space station astronauts adhere to rigorous exercise regimens, and doctors on the ground closely monitor their health.

But experiments such as the one with medaka fish do not hold potential benefits for only spaceflyers. The results of these types of studies can have far-reaching effects on Earth, too.

"It's an experiment, essentially, for osteoporosis," Ford explained.

The lessons learned from studying the skeletal systems of fish in space can inform scientists on the ground about how bones degrade over time here on Earth. This type of scientific research is part of what inspired the motto for this space station-bound crew: From the Earth, for the Earth.

"The idea is that the space station is up there for everybody, and even though it's essentially 15 countries that put [forward] their resources, it's really there for everybody on the planet."

But for Ford, Tarelkin and Novitskiy, the medaka fish will also be their companions for the thrilling journey to the International Space Station.

"I won't have my 'gone fishing' hat, though," Ford joked.

Billboard compares Obama to Colorado shooting suspect

By NBC News staff

"Offensive." "Abhorrent." "Pathetic." Words like that are being used to describe a billboard in Caldwell, Idaho, that compares President Barack Obama ? unfavorably ? to James Eagan Holmes, the suspect in the shooting deaths of 12 people in a Colorado movie theater last week.

The sign features?photos?of Holmes and Obama side by side. Of Holmes, it says: "Kills 12 in a movie theater with assault rifle, everyone freaks out." Of Obama, it says: "Kills thousands with foreign policy, wins Nobel Peace Prize."

The electronic billboard often blares anti-Obama messages, but this one struck people as especially insensitive. It's the work of supporters of the late Ralph Smeed, for many years a lightning-rod activist for libertarian causes in Idaho, The Idaho Statesman of Boise reported.

"This billboard is offensive to all those lives lost and affected by the shooting," wrote a commenter on the Facebook page of KBOI-TV of Boise, which first reported the story. "Just pathetic, even if this is their expression of the 1st amendment."

?

Another called it "insulting, ridiculous and just plain inaccurate."

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

Maurice Clements, a former Idaho lawmaker who now keeps Smeed's tradition alive, told the Statesman: "We're all outraged over that killing in Aurora, Colo., but we're not outraged over the boys killed in Afghanistan."

Asked about the reaction to his billboard, Clements acknowledged: "That's a technique of trying to make a point, and maybe it was poorly done."

Billie Joe Armstrong joins NBC's 'Voice' as mentor

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? NBC's "The Voice" is adding a high-powered rocker to the mix.

NBC said Thursday that Green Day vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has joined the talent contest as a mentor to Christina Aguilera's team this coming season.

In a statement, Armstrong said he and his family are fans of the show.

"The Voice" has won over viewers because "it's not molding artists, it's just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover," he said.

Besides, Armstrong says, working with Aguilera is "a lot of fun." He started taping Wednesday on "The Voice," which has been in production for season three since June.

As the talent contest field grows more crowded, shows are competing for big-name music stars. "American Idol" is adding Mariah Carey as a judge, and "The X Factor" signed Britney Spears and Demi Lovato.

"The Voice" returns Sept. 10.

That's good timing for Green Day: The band has three albums coming out in quick succession, with the first, "Uno!", to be released Sept. 25.

In addition to Aguilera, the show's coaches include Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Carson Daly is the host.

Mayor wants inspiration, not procreation at London Games

LONDON (Reuters) - As the Olympic machine warmed up in the British capital on Thursday, London's mayor Boris Johnson flexed his rhetorical muscles with added panache.

Addressing "captains of industry, intergalactic leaders" at an investment conference to harness the July 27 to August 12 Games, Johnson packed in the superlatives to extol the city's virtues.

"The whole of London is a zone of intellectual and cultural cross-fertilisation, with all the energy and enthusiasm that I am told is to be found in the Olympic village itself," he said.

"That's why 'inspire a generation' is our motto. Not necessarily 'create a generation', which is what they sometimes get up to in the Olympic village."

Around 150,000 condoms will be distributed among the 10,500 athletes - a rate of 15 to one.

Astrologer's Clients
William Lilly, an astrologer, kept practice books listing his clients, their questions and the figures or horoscopes that he cast. Their questions relate to stolen property, probable success in any undertaking, ships at sea, health, long-life, love, marriage, pregnancy, &c. The books came into the possession of Elias Ashmole, who bequeathed them to Oxford University. This calendar was prepared by William Henry Black and printed in 1845. He lists the clients by folio number, remarking 'the names are often omitted, and usually written invertedly, or disguised in some other manner'. Where a date of birth is specified in the practice book, it is given in the calendar. Practice Book II is for consultations from 22 September 1645 to 17 August 1646.

Loyal Addresses of the Inhabitants of Haverfordwest and of Cirencester
A loyal address, 18 October 1775, from the Mayor, Sheriff, Aldermen, Common Council-men and inhabitants of the town and county of Haverfordwest, condemning rebellion in the American Colonies, and expressing wholehearted loyalty to Crown and Parliament, was presented to king George III, 14 November 1775, 'Which Address His Majesty was pleased to receive very graciously.' 'Let those wicked Persons, who from hence either secretly abet, or in America openly support, this destructive Contest, be taught some Truths, of which it is material that they and their misguided Followers should no longer be ignorant.' A similar address was presented at the same time from the Steward, Bailiffs and principal inhabitants of the ancient borough of Cirencester condemning 'so ill-founded and so unnatural a Rebellion'. Both addresses are subscribed by lists of inhabitants.

Following several meetings in London in June 1812, a Union for Parliamentary Reform was established, drawing support from throughout Britain. The union's principal tenets were:
'1. Representation - the happiest discovery of political wisdom - is the vital principle of the English Constitution, inasmuch as it is that alone, which in a state, too extensive for personal legislation, constitutes political liberty.
'2. Political Liberty being a common right, representation co-extensive with direct taxation, ought, with all practicable equality, to be fairly and honestly distributed throughout the community, the facility of which cannot be denied.
'3. The constitutional duration of a Parliament cannot exceed one year.'

Common Ground On Gun Control?

By Frank Jack Fiamingo

Common Ground, Gun Control

Common Ground, Gun Control

New Jersey Second Amendment Society

New Jersey Second Amendment Society

New Jersey --(Ammoland.com)- Most people will acknowledge that it is not guns but rather the misuse of guns that is the real problem.

I believe that most ?gun control? advocates simply want to prevent the loss of innocent life and that those of us who use firearms for sport, hunting, recreation and defense of self and family abhor the initiation of violence.

We all want the same thing; to see an end to the senseless slaughter. There is more common ground than one might at first suspect.

The difficulty revolves around how different people believe we can and should solve the actual problem of violence.

I am sure we would all be just as horrified if a murderer used a bomb, a machete or a gun. Perhaps we all need to focus on what drives a person to kill rather than on how they achieve their goal. The result is always the same. Families will never again share the joy of life with their murdered loved ones. They are left to mourn and grieve while trying to understand the incomprehensible.

All the rhetoric in the world will not solve the real problem. There are truly evil people in the world who murder for their own reasons. Some kill for gain, some to avoid responsibility and (as much as it sickens rational people), some individuals kill because they enjoy it. In many cases, I am sure the murderer is simply deranged.

A significant reason why we cannot prevent these murders is simply because we cannot predict them. Although it is not common, a person who appears perfectly normal one day, may experience a break from reality, choose a weapon and begin murdering people for absolutely no reason. We often have no indication whatsoever who that person might be. The arm-chair analysts who perform the post mortems on these events are never there the day before to prevent them.

If they were, we would not need to have this conversation.

Some people believe that you can reduce the number of murders by controlling both the availability and the type of firearms people are allowed to possess. The problem is that although this approach MIGHT possibly prevent a murderer from using a particular firearm to commit his crime, it is FAR from a guarantee that he or she will not find another method of creating mayhem. In fact, since only those individuals who are sane and responsible follow the dictates of firearms regulations, it is unlikely that laws controlling the LEGAL access to firearms would prevent the murderer from using them.

You might say, ?Well it can?t hurt?, but that is not accurate. It can and does hurt to prevent legal access to firearms to a woman seeking to protect her body from a much larger assailant or to a parent protecting his or her family from a neighborhood gang intent on stealing the family car and raping the occupants. I find it difficult to believe that THAT is the intent of those who are trying to PREVENT the murder of innocent people. That just doesn?t make any sense.

I did not write this essay with the illusion that I could single handedly solve the problem of ?gun control? in New Jersey or across the nation. I am hoping that it will be possible to open up some real productive dialogue on how we can work together with people who hold various positions on this issue to make some progress toward finding some practical solutions. Perhaps there is no way to prevent random acts of violence but perhaps we can try to identify those instances where there are telltale signs; perhaps not. I don?t know if that is possible but what I do know is that it is just as unproductive to shout ?FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!? as it is to shout ?GUNS KILL!?.

I invite anyone with a constructive opinion on these issues to feel free to contact me. Let?s at least think about the problem constructively and try to avoid the usual rhetoric. We already know THAT doesn?t work. Everyone seems to continue to offer the same arguments expecting different results. Perhaps we are all missing something.

Thank you Frank Jack Fiamingo President@nj2as.com

Bruce Jenner recalls his early reality TV days

By Randee Dawn

He's perhaps best known as an outstanding athlete who broke three world records, earned an Olympic?gold medal for decathlon and famously appeared on a box of Wheaties. But Bruce Jenner -- who says he's ready to step in if Hoda Kotb ever abandons her position next to Kathie Lee Gifford on TODAY -- says he's got lengthier ties to a different career path: Namely, as a reality TV star.?

"I started doing reality (TV) 36 years ago, first show I ever did ... 'Battle of the Network Stars,'"?Jenner said on TODAY Wednesday. "I've been doing this type of stuff forever."

Today he's best known for being the rare male and non-Kardashian among the gaggle of ladies in "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." Married to Kris for 21 years, he's the stepfather to her clan and the pair have two daughters of their own, Kylie and Kendall. And his family has quite famously kept his reality TV career going.?

But, wondered Kotb, was everything okay between him and Kris?

Of course,?he told her: "Everything is just wonderful." Jenner looked off-camera with a smile, asking, "Isn't that what I'm supposed to say, honey?" Turning back, he continued, "No, everything is just wonderful.... In any relationship, you know there's differences of opinion, this and that."

A recent episode of "Keeping" showed Jenner unhappy with some of the ladies for failing to be punctual. But that scene doesn't mean there's trouble in paradise. As the reality show expert philosophized, "Honestly, when the cameras are there all the time, they're going to find stuff like that."

Russia warns Syria against using chemical weapons

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia chided its longtime ally Syria on Tuesday over its threat to use chemical weapons in case of a foreign attack, but Moscow gave no sign it was abandoning President Bashar Assad's regime, despite growing international condemnation over the violence in the Arab country.

Syria is Russia's last remaining ally in the Middle East and hosts the only naval base Moscow has outside the former Soviet Union. Russia has protected Syria from international sanctions and supplied it with weapons amid an escalating civil war.

On Monday, Syria threatened to unleash its chemical and biological weapons if it faces a foreign attack ? its first-ever acknowledgement it possesses weapons of mass destruction.

In a statement that reflected a degree of irritation with Assad, the Russian Foreign Ministry reminded Syria that it had ratified a global convention banning the use of chemical weapons. It added that Russia expects Syria to "unfailingly honor its international obligations."

The statement follows earlier Russian rebukes of Assad's heavy-handed use of force and slow pace of reforms.

But despite occasional criticism, Russia has staunchly refused to back international calls for the Syrian strongman to step down, saying that foreign players have no right to determine the nation's political future, and that it must be decided by Syrians themselves.

A 16-month uprising in Syria has morphed into a civil war has killed more than 19,000, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The escalating fighting is also feeding fears that Syria's war could spill across borders and spark a regional conflagration.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made it clear Monday that Moscow would not join those pressuring Assad to step down. "If the Syrian leadership is ousted from power by unconstitutional means, the leadership and the opposition will trade places and the civil war will continue," Putin said.

On Thursday, Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed United Nations resolution threatening Assad's regime with sanctions ? the third such double veto of a U.N. motion addressing the crisis. The next day, the U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution renewing the 300-strong U.N. observer force in Syria for another 30 days.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said in an interview with TV host Charlie Rose to be broadcast Tuesday night on PBS that Syrian President Bashar Assad is not a "stooge" awaiting for orders from Moscow.

"This is a misperception that he is sitting there like waiting for the phone call from Moscow to tell him what to do," he said. "This is not the case."

Churkin said Assad has shown no interest in stepping down and if he did, it could aggravate the situation because he would most likely be replaced by even "more hard-line people in his entourage."

He urged an end to the fighting, saying the opposition's failure to enter into dialogue with the government is a recipe for continued conflict which could go on "maybe for years" with varying degrees of intensity.

Sat-nav sheep support prediction

Instead of fleeing randomly when faced with a predator, sheep attempt to bury themselves within their flock, new UK research has shown.

The theory that animals moving in groups retreat towards the centre of their flocks if a predator appears has been tested before.

But the researchers are the first to show that sheep behave this way using GPS technology.

Details of the work are published in the journal Current Biology.

Dr Andrew King of The Royal Veterinary College in London co-authored the paper with colleagues from UCL and Cambridge University.

After training an Australian Kelpie working dog to herd a flock of sheep towards an open gate, Dr King's team tracked the movement of the individual sheep as they reacted to the threat and interacted with each other.

Their research shows that as the dog got within 70m of the flock, the sheep began to clump towards the centre of the group.

The British evolutionary biologist Bill Hamilton predicted that individuals within groups move towards the centre when danger appears in order to reduce the chance of being picked off by a predator.

Controlling the threat

However, studying group reactions to predation is very difficult, as it is often challenging to predict when an attack is imminent.

By using the sheep dog, the researchers controlled the experiment and by placing GPS receivers in a small "backpack" on each sheep, it was possible to record all the movements of the animals.

"For the first time, we could show the individual movement trajectories of all the animals involved," explained Dr King.

"Before, we could 'say, yep, they move in and run to the centre'. But because of the GPS backpacks tracking movement every second, [we were able] to monitor every animal when they were under threat".

"The field of collective behaviour is undergoing rapid change at the moment," Prof Jens Krause of Humboldt University in Germany, who was not involved with the project, told BBC News.

"We are getting better and better techniques for studying what is going on and understanding the mechanisms by which animals organise and accomplish collective feats, like sudden changes in direction."

The researchers hope their work will act as a baseline on which further studies into how neurological changes can affect behaviours between individuals can be built.

Video: River networks on Titan point to a puzzling geologic history

Monday, July 23, 2012

For many years, Titan's thick, methane- and nitrogen-rich atmosphere kept astronomers from seeing what lies beneath. Saturn's largest moon appeared through telescopes as a hazy orange orb, in contrast to other heavily cratered moons in the solar system.

In 2004, the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft ? a probe that flies by Titan as it orbits Saturn ? penetrated Titan's haze, providing scientists with their first detailed images of the surface. Radar images revealed an icy terrain carved out over millions of years by rivers of liquid methane, similar to how rivers of water have etched into Earth's rocky continents.

While images of Titan have revealed its present landscape, very little is known about its geologic past. Now researchers at MIT and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville have analyzed images of Titan's river networks and determined that in some regions, rivers have created surprisingly little erosion. The researchers say there are two possible explanations: either erosion on Titan is extremely slow, or some other recent phenomena may have wiped out older riverbeds and landforms.

"It's a surface that should have eroded much more than what we're seeing, if the river networks have been active for a long time," says Taylor Perron, the Cecil and Ida Green Assistant Professor of Geology at MIT. "It raises some very interesting questions about what has been happening on Titan in the last billion years."

A paper detailing the group's findings will appear in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets.

What accounts for a low crater count?

Compared to most moons in our solar system, Titan is relatively smooth, with few craters pockmarking its facade. Titan is around four billion years old, about the same age as the rest of the solar system. But judging by the number of craters, one might estimate that its surface is much younger, between 100 million and one billion years old.

What might explain this moon's low crater count? Perron says the answer may be similar to what happens on Earth.

"We don't have many impact craters on Earth," Perron says. "People flock to them because they're so few, and one explanation is that Earth's continents are always eroding or being covered with sediment. That may be the case on Titan, too."

For example, plate tectonics, erupting volcanoes, advancing glaciers and river networks have all reshaped Earth's surface over billions of years. On Titan, similar processes ? tectonic upheaval, icy lava eruptions, erosion and sedimentation by rivers ? may be at work.

But identifying which of these geological phenomena may have modified Titan's surface is a significant challenge. Images generated by the Cassini spacecraft, similar to aerial photos but with much coarser resolution, are flat, depicting terrain from a bird's-eye perspective, with no information about a landform's elevation or depth.

"It's an interesting challenge," Perron says. "It's almost like we were thrown back a few centuries, before there were many topographic maps, and we only had maps showing where the rivers are."

Charting a river's evolution

Perron and MIT graduate student Benjamin Black set out to determine the extent to which river networks may have renewed Titan's surface. The team analyzed images taken from Cassini-Huygens, and mapped 52 prominent river networks from four regions on Titan. The researchers compared the images with a model of river network evolution developed by Perron. This model depicts the evolution of a river over time, given variables such as the strength of the underlying material and the rate of flow through the river channels. As a river erodes slowly through the ice, it transforms from a long, spindly thread into a dense, treelike network of tributaries.

Black compared his measurements of Titan's river networks with the model, and found the moon's rivers most resembled the early stages of a typical terrestrial river's evolution. The observations indicate that rivers in some regions have caused very little erosion, and hence very little modification of Titan's surface.

"They're more on the long and spindly side," Black says. "You do see some full and branching networks, and that's tantalizing, because if we get more data, it will be interesting to know whether there really are regional differences."

Going a step further, Black compared Titan's images with recently renewed landscapes on Earth, including volcanic terrain on the island of Kauai and recently glaciated landscapes in North America. The river networks in those locations are similar in form to those on Titan, suggesting that geologic processes may have reshaped the moon's icy surface in the recent past.

"It's a weirdly Earth-like place, even with this exotic combination of materials and temperatures," Perron says. "And so you can still say something definitive about the erosion. It's the same physics."

Home Remodeling Design and Planning

A Few Home Remodeling Rules
When you begin to think about remodeling your home, it's easy to go overboard, tackle too much, or overspend. However, if you follow a few basic home remodeling rules, you can avoid those difficulties. Here are some things to think about--even before you begin your remodeling project.
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOJ2LYFw32f9rH13eXSQI_VtwDaWCRp69ZYEej2eaZEE8Y2LGl1OtJzqh1Yc7Lp1Agmx0FTLzAqPOxB8alGU_mxEuTQocmtlfuf60pZs2Q0djWmU_QVWO_Y8rApP7ZBx65gpHzEthd-nQK/s1600/home_remodeling_design_green.jpg

Remodeling Costs

Allow for the project to cost more than you originally thought it would. Regardless of which room you decide to remodel, you will typically find your ultimate cost to be about 25 percent higher than your original estimate. The same 25 percent figure also applies to the amount of time it will take to complete the project.

For example, if you have decided to spend $10,000 to remodel your kitchen and give yourself five weeks to finish the job, you can generally expect to end up spending about $12,500 and seven weeks on the project. There are no hard-and-fast rules, but one thing experienced remodeling professionals have learned--always expect the unexpected.

Shop Around and Plan

Take your measurements carefully, and do lots of research concerning the types of things that are available on the market to help you accomplish your remodeling goal. Go to your home improvement store and get test paint color samples. You can generally also obtain test samples of flooring materials such as carpet or hardwood flooring. Don't be afraid to ask your retailer for samples. They expect it, and are generally happy to supply them. They want you to be happy--and you don't want to make an expensive mistake by choosing the wrong materials. Ask your home improvement professionals for their input, as well. They will normally be aware of the latest developments in whatever field of remodeling you're going to tackle. Again, that?s their job, and they will be happy to help.

Design Details

Once you've decided on your main components, don't forget to spend time on the small things, as well. It's easy to get caught up in deciding upon big ticket items, but it's often the interior design details, like trim, accent colors, and hardware that really make a remodeling project come to life.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Remember, remodeling is a sort of organic process, in which you're going to make mistakes, you're going to change your mind and do things somewhat differently than you had originally planned, and you're going to run into things that you hadn't anticipated. That's all part of the remodeling game, so just roll with it.

Finally, try to use the best quality of materials you can afford. If you're planning to be in your home for awhile, you're going to be living with the materials and hardware you use in your remodel, so you want them to be as nice as you can. It's not worth it to sacrifice your future enjoyment of the materials by skimping on quality during the remodeling job. Cheaper products also generally have a shorter lifespan, so they may actually end up costing more in the long run, once you have to replace them again.

Overall, remodeling can be a rewarding experience, if you just follow a few simple rules, choose your home remodeling design details carefully, and use common sense along the way.
