I?m just going to come right out and say it: Mac and iPhone users are safer than Windows and Android users. There it is.

I can sense a tsunami of comments flooding in like never before, so allow me to explain what I mean.

There is vastly less malware (viruses, worms, botnets, etc.) on OS X and iOS than there is on Windows and, more recently, Android. We all acknowledge this. But many of you are saying that that doesn?t mean that Apple?s operating systems are more secure than Windows or Android. True. I didn?t say they?re more secure; I said they?re safer.

What else do you have to knock down that statement? Ah, yes, there?s less malware on OS X than on Windows because there are fewer Mac users than Windows users ? the bad guys simply write their heinous ware for the larger market. To which I say: That may be at least partially true in the case of OS X vs. Windows, but it flies in the face of reason when it comes to iOS vs. Android.

So now you?re saying that the Android Markets are ?free? and ?open? vs. Apple?s heavy-handed curation of its App Store. And now we?re getting to an interesting discussion.

Apple users are safer for many reasons. We can talk about size of the Mac population vs. the Windows population, but I firmly believe the answer is far more complex than that (though I have no doubt that population size plays a role).

Apple?s decision to curate the App Store and the Mac App Store suggests to some that the company has become the Big Brother it once mocked . I don?t buy that. To me, it looks like part of a strategy for keeping its users safer. Another element of that strategy became evident with last week?s announcement of the next version of OS X, Mountain Lion and its Gatekeeper feature .

For all intents and purposes, iOS has had a ?Gatekeeper? implicitly in its inner workings since day one. Now, Apple is bringing that to the Mac as well. What is it? It?s a security subsystem that prevents unauthorised applications from being installed without the user?s explicit permission. In Mountain Lion, those applications can come from the Mac App Store or they can be digitally signed by a registered Mac application developer. Other software ? including malware and viruses ? are forbidden from being installed.

I know what a good portion of Computerworld?s readership has to say about that sort of thing, though: I want more freedom as a user; I need to be able to do whatever I want with my computer. But Apple isn?t doing anything to take away such freedom from the population of technically inclined users. You can continue to do as you please, while the masses of less technically accomplished users get a bit of protection from malware. The power to do whatever you want on your computer is something that the vast majority of users wouldn?t want, seek or even know what to do with. And yet it?s exactly the sort of power we?ve been providing them for years and years in the PC industry.

The fact is that most users will make inappropriate choices when given options on what to install all the time. That happens not because they?re idiots, but because they don?t know the facts and their ramifications. They aren?t armed with the same knowledge that the techies have.

So for most users, Apple?s strategy is brilliant. The app stores for iOS and the Mac provide a curated environment to select a vast array of application software. Gatekeeper prevents unauthorised software from being installed.

That strategy has been working pretty well for Apple on iOS. It?s not perfect ? nothing is. We?ve seen examples of the curation process failing. We?ve seen many examples of ?jail breaking? software that can exploit an underlying software weakness and entirely circumvent the curation process.

But, by and large, the curated app stores have been doing a pretty good job at giving users what they really want: power to run what they need to do and peace of mind in being reasonably safe from the malware and vermin that plague the Windows and Android worlds.

I say kudos to Apple for this. I also say that Apple needs to improve its curation processes and procedures, since it now has a whole lot of eggs in one basket. Mistakes in that one key portion of its process can and will have far-reaching ramifications, after all.

In the genes, but which ones? Studies that linked specific genes to intelligence were largely wrong, experts say

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? For decades, scientists have understood that there is a genetic component to intelligence, but a new Harvard study has found both that most of the genes thought to be linked to the trait are probably not in fact related to it, and identifying intelligence's specific genetic roots may still be a long way off.

Led by David I. Laibson '88, the Robert I. Goldman Professor of Economics, and Christopher F. Chabris '88, Ph.D. '99, assistant professor of psychology at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., a team of researchers examined a dozen genes using large data sets that included both intelligence testing and genetic data. As reported in a forthcoming article in the journal Psychological Science, they found that in nearly every case, the hypothesized genetic pathway failed to replicate. In other words, intelligence could not be linked to the specific genes that were tested.

"It is only in the past 10 or 15 years that we have had the technology for people to do studies that involved picking a particular genetic variant and investigating whether people who score higher on intelligence tests tend to have that genetic variant," said Chabris. "In all of our tests we only found one gene that appeared to be associated with intelligence, and it was a very small effect. This does not mean intelligence does not have a genetic component, it means it's a lot harder to find the particular genes, or the particular genetic variants, that influence the differences in intelligence."

To get at the question of how genes influence intelligence, researchers first needed data, and plenty of it.

Though it had long been understood, based on studies of twins, that intelligence was a heritable trait, it wasn't until relatively recently that the technology emerged to allow scientists to directly probe DNA in a search for genes that affected intelligence.

The problem, Chabris said, was that early technology for assaying genes was very expensive, meaning that such studies were typically limited to, at most, several hundred subjects, who would take IQ tests and provide DNA samples for testing.

As part of their study, Chabris and his colleagues relied on several pre-existing data sets -- a massive study of Wisconsin high school graduates that began in the 1950s, the Framingham Heart Study, and an ongoing survey of all twins born in Sweden -- to expand that subject pool from a few hundred to many thousands.

"What we want to emphasize is that we are not saying the people who did earlier research in this area were foolish or wrong," Chabris said. "They were using the best technology they had available. At the time it was believed that individual genes would have a much larger effect -- they were expecting to find genes that might each account for several IQ points."

To identify genes that might play a role in intelligence, previous researchers used the "candidate gene approach," which requires identifying a gene that is already linked with a known biological function -- such as Alzheimer's disease or the production of a specific neurotransmitter. If people who scored high on intelligence tests shared a particular variant of that gene, it was believed, that demonstrated the gene's role in intelligence.

"These were reasonable hypotheses," said study co-author Daniel J. Benjamin '99, Ph.D. '06, assistant professor of economics at Cornell University. "But in retrospect, either the findings were false positives or the effects of the genes are much, much smaller than anyone had anticipated."

Chabris, however, emphasized that the results don't point to the idea that the dozen genes examined in the study play no role in intelligence, but rather suggest that intelligence may be tied to many genes and the ways in which they interact.

"As is the case with other traits, like height, there are probably thousands of genes and their variants that are associated with intelligence," he said. "And there may be other genetic effects beyond the single gene effects -- there could be interactions between genes, there could be interactions between genes and the environment. What our results show is that the way researchers have been looking for genes that may be related to intelligence -- the candidate gene method -- is fairly likely to result in false positives, so other methods should be used."

LONDON (AP) ? The closing ceremony for 2012 London Olympics will be themed "A Symphony of British Music" ? with organizers promising a hit-packed journey from classical composer Edward Elgar to Grammy soul diva Adele.

"It is, in a sense, the soundtrack of our lives," said Stephen Daldry, executive producer of the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies.

The ceremony's artistic director, Kim Gavin, said the Aug. 12 show would be an "elegant mashup of British music" packed with recognizable songs arranged symphonically. The London Symphony Orchestra will provide musical backing.

"We go from ? without saying we've booked anyone ? Elgar to Adele," said music director David Arnold.

The creative team is keeping the names of the musicians involved under wraps, although The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and the Spice Girls have all been suggested as possible performers.

Olympic officials did not say whether Adele, Britain's hottest musical export of the moment, had been asked to take part. The singer-songwriter's album "21" has spent a full year on the charts, winning six Grammys earlier this month, including album of the year. Adele also won two trophies Tuesday at the Brit music awards.

Gavin, who has overseen tours for the band Take That and directed the 2007 Princess Diana memorial concert, said the London Olympics closing ceremony would be "the biggest after-show party ? the show being the sport."

Designer Es Devlin said the show, which will include 3,500 performers, would be a visual extravaganza drawing on icons of British art and design.

The games start July 27.

Student loans are a ticking 'debt bomb'

It?s a vicious cycle. Many families in this country cannot afford the skyrocketing cost of higher education without student loans. But many graduates cannot find a job and cannot pay off the loans. As a result, they wind up in a much deeper hole (as the interest and collection fees accrue) with no way out.?

Student loan debt in the U.S. now totals more than $1 trillion. That?s more than all the outstanding credit card debt in the country.

A recent report by the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys found that both students and parents are borrowing at record rates.?

College seniors who graduated with student loans in 2010 owed an average of $25,250, up five percent from the previous year. Parents had an average of $34,000 in student loans for their children. The report says the number of these parental loans has jumped 75 percent since 2005-2006.?

?These are enormous numbers,? says Ike Shulman, a bankruptcy attorney in San Jose, Calif.? ?They?re basically setting us up for having a large number of fellow citizens become economically non-functional for the rest of their adult lives.??

Growing numbers of people are being crushed by this debt -- unable to pay and unable to get relief. A recent nationwide survey of bankruptcy attorneys by NACBA found that most (81 percent) had seen a spike in the number of people with student loan debt looking for help. But in most cases, there is nothing a lawyer can do.?

Current law makes it almost impossible to discharge student loan debt through bankruptcy. And unlike other unsecured debt, there is no statute of limitations on student loans. Lenders can pursue borrowers to the grave.?

?It?s not fair and it needs to be corrected,? says NACBA president William Brewer. ?It is a debt bomb that could cripple our society.??

The association?s report says the country faces a serious economic threat from this growing mountain of student debt, one that could be every bit as devastating as the mortgage meltdown.?

?This will be a drag on the economy for the foreseeable future,? warns John Roa, an attorney with the National Consumer Law Center and NACBA?s vice president.?

It?s a problem for students and parents who co-signed loans
Dave Ingham, a disabled Vietnam veteran who lives in Minneapolis, fears he could lose his savings and his house because he co-signed student loans -- now in default -- for his son. Ingham is being sued by collectors.?

His son Shannon has been unable to find work since October 2009. He?s now been diagnosed with acute anxiety disorder and depression. He?s still looking for work, but his father says the loan defaults keep him from getting hired.?

?It seems that whenever he comes close to a job interview, they run a credit check, see his loan defaults and the interview does not proceed,? Ingham said at a recent telephone news conference arranged by NACBA.??

Can something be done?
With student loans backed by the federal government, someone in trouble can try to get the payments deferred or modified. There are even loan forgiveness programs.? With private loans, it?s pay or end up in default.?

The National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys wants a ?safety net? under student loans, just as there is for other consumer lending.?

If you start a business that fails, they point out, you can file for bankruptcy and go on with your life. But college students -- or their parents -- don?t have the same protection.?

?We need to make some common sense reforms, something like creating an escape valve to relieve some of the pressure before the whole thing blows sky high,? says NACBA vice president John Roa. ?There?s no way to diffuse this bomb if the status quo remains the same.??

NACBA wants Congress to roll back the bankruptcy code to 1978, when borrowers who couldn?t pay off their student loans (private or government-guaranteed) could discharge that debt in bankruptcy.?

Rep. Steve Cohen, (D-Tennessee), has introduced a bill, H.R. 2028: Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Fairness Act, which would treat private student loan debt the same as other consumer debt.?

Congressman Cohen says his bill would ?restore fair treatment to Americans in severe financial distress? and give ?an honest but unfortunate debtor a chance for a financial fresh start.??

The bill is supported by the American Association of Community Colleges, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education and the American Federation of Teachers, as well as various consumer groups.?There is currently no formal opposition.

The idea of making it easier to discharge student loan debt via bankruptcy will not sit well with those who backed bankruptcy reforms passed in 2005. Clearly, getting the law changed is a long-shot.?

Dave Ingham says he doesn?t know how to solve the current situation. But he believes something should be done before others face the same financial ruin he does.?

?It?s something that?s really out of control,? Ingham says. ?There are thousands and thousands of us out there who need help with this situation. Please do not give up on us.??

MADRID (AP) -Spain will play China in its final warmup match before starting the defense of its European crown in Poland and Ukraine.

Spain will host the Asian opponent in Seville on June 3 before traveling to Poland, where the city of Gdansk hosts its first Group C game against Italy on June 10.

Spain will play at least one other friendly, likely on May 26 from a yet to be determined site in Austria where Spain has made it a tradition to hold pre-tournament camps after winning Euro 2008 there. Spain also gathered in Austria two years ago before winning the World Cup in South Africa.

Spain is looking to become the first country to defend its European title after winning the World Cup.

It also plays Ireland and Croatia in Group C.

Jason Wu said in a pre-show interview that he aimed to interpret different elements of historical Chinese fashion through the lens of Dietrich's 1932 film "Shanghai Express."

"I don't need to say any more about Marlene Dietrich, or that time and place. It all has such strong features," Wu said.

Dietrich also was an inspiration for Tadashi Shoji, who previewed his looks Thursday. And Rag & Bone, showing Friday, took inspiration from Asian culture, while Yigal Azrouel used tailoring to give structure to the looser silhouette that also seems to be emerging this week as a trend.

Luxury has become a signature of Som, but this season he did it more with soft leathers, cozy cashmere and silk instead of exotic furs and feathers. There were a few fox coats that were colored as if they were lipstick graffiti.

Otherwise, though, the palette was very uptown: winter white, camel, emerald green and plum.

KATE SPADE NEW YORK

Kate Spade New York offered a playful shoutout to Paris with styles in maraschino red, aqua and forest green, huge polka dots and graphic prints.

Creative director Deborah Lloyd matched the walls at the brand's show in a black dress adorned with French script reading "Toutes les filles sont folles," or "All the girls are crazy." She perched her models on columns in a downtown space, inspired by gardens near the Palais-Royal in Paris and the columns in its famous courtyard. "The last time I was there, all these cute girls were being statues on columns," she said.

Her "joie de vivre" embracing Paris and the fashionable women who live there also showed up in a pattern adorned with colored drawings of the women themselves, including one holding a lit cigarette.

"There's definitely a French, flirtatious feeling to this collection," Lloyd said.

On the runway there were folded skirts ? a particularly nice one done in walnut-colored leather ? that was paired with a polo-neck T-shirt and a high-neck, below-the-hip raj jacket, and draped, low-slung dhoti pants with a striped wool biker tailcoat.

The tapestry-style brocade outfits, jazzed up with flashes of silver and copper, were dressier than garments typical of Rag & Bone.

YIGAL AZROUEL

One of the dominant looks emerging this fashion week that Yigal Azrouel did well was the idea of a looser silhouette while still giving structure with tailoring. There was definitely nothing frilly or flouncy in his pieces, which were seasonal with what he called a bit of "cold minimalism."

He favored cashmere and silk, with hints of leather and fur, with a standout winter-white wool hooded pullover top paired with skinny trousers, and a lovely light tan gabardine dress with architectural lines. A cable-knit sweater dress seemed perfect for the chilly weather evoked by the line.

He embraced the use of soft, supple leather, another emerging must-have item, and a mostly neutral color palette with pops of emerald green and shades of purple and burgundy.

National Cancer Prevention Month Reminds to Avoid Mesothelioma ...

Not only is February marked by Valentine?s Day, President?s Day and Black History Month, but it is also National Cancer Prevention Month.

For the nearly 1,596,670 cancer patients and their families, a focus on cancer prevention may likely supersede all other occasions in the month of February.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be one of the most difficult things for any individual to deal with, in addition to the countless treatments, medications and follow ups that will be involved.

National Cancer Prevention Month was created to minimize the number of these cancer diagnoses that will occur in the future by educating the public on health issues.

During this period we look at all the causes of cancers and determine how treatments can be better developed. For rare cancers like mesothelioma, caused by asbestos exposures, the discussion should be held about how to minimize or eliminate the root cause of this rare yet deadly disease.

Up to 3,000 people die from this cancer every year, many of whom developed it from occupational exposure, which is primarily preventable.

For diseases like lung cancer, which affects more than 226,000 people a year, there is tremendous opportunity to minimize future cases. With the spotlight on cancer prevention during February, more emphasis will be placed on initiatives and education that teach people about the tools available to prevent various cancers.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 50 percent of all men and 33 percent of all women in the United States will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime. This represents a sizable population that will directly or indirectly affect each and every one of us.

Preventing Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma

Lung cancer is a disease that is widespread and not unique to any specific demographic. The primary causes are well understood and should be avoided whenever possible.

That?s not to say people avoid all the causes (smoking, radon and asbestos).

In keeping with National Cancer Prevention Month, we will identify the causes and risk factors of lung cancer and mesothelioma, which will hopefully promote and encourage potential cancer patients to take steps in the right direction.

Smoking accounts for almost 90 percent of all lung cancer cases. The toxic smoke from cigarettes, cigars, hookahs, marijuana and other products can greatly contribute to your risk of developing lung cancer.

Cigarettes account for the vast majority of these cases. There are over 7,000 toxic chemicals contained within cigarettes, 69 of which are known carcinogens, or cancer causing agents.

Reducing or eliminating your smoking of cigarettes and other products will minimize your risk of developing this disease.

Asbestos exposure is another known cause of lung cancer that accounts for approximately four percent of these cancer cases. Exposure to this toxic material can occur in multiple ways but most commonly occurs in an occupational environment.

By working in industries such as construction, mining or manufacturing, you are likely at an increased risk. Because asbestos was also used in construction materials within homes built in earlier decades, it is also possible to be exposed at home.

Properly testing for it, and performing asbestos abatement if necessary, can be one of the best ways to minimize your risk of developing lung cancer.

Another cancer that should be recognized during National Cancer Prevention Month is mesothelioma. This rare disease is a cancer of the lining of the lungs and is almost exclusively a result of asbestos exposure.

The first official diagnoses came during the mid-1900s, when doctors began seeing respiratory illnesses from patients who seemingly all worked within similar industries.

This cancer is considered extremely aggressive and is notable for limiting life expectancy between four and 18 months after diagnosis. The best method for preventing mesothelioma altogether is by reducing your exposure to asbestos and similar toxins.

This can be accomplished by ensuring that your workplace is not tainted with asbestos, in addition to understanding your risk at home.

Despite the fact that National Cancer Prevention Month is only designated for the month of February, the practice educating people about cancer prevention should occur throughout the entire year.

Limiting the right decisions to only 28 days throughout the year will not solve the problem. Through organizations like the Mesothelioma Cancer Center, education about preventative measures can be learned at any times through the website or free support resources.
