More than football ? Sports ? - The Daily Citizen

It?s common for high school football coaches to tout the competition aspect as one of the main reasons for participating in seven-on-seven tournaments during the summer.

With the first game and opponent still weeks away, the non-contact version of the game offers them a chance to break out of offseason training mode, work toward a common goal and polish some of their on-the-field skills in the process.

However, for some high school teams in this weekend?s Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship, it isn?t all about on-the-field stuff ? but that doesn?t mean the tournament is any less important to making them better.

?The kids love it,? Paoli coach Brian Balsmeyer said. ?They get to bond with one another and they also get away from what they know back home. A lot of these kids don?t know much outside of their hometown.?

Several teams made lengthy trips to Dalton for the third annual edition of The Daily Citizen?s two-day tournament, which is sponsored by AstroTurf. Saturday?s action included 40 teams from 35 schools ? five had a ?B? team in the field ? competing in pool play, with the top four teams in each pool advancing to today?s championship bracket play and the others moving into the consolation bracket.

The tournament resumes at 8:30 a.m., and the double-elimination format concludes at 4:30 p.m. with each bracket?s final. Championship bracket games will be held at the Dalton Parks and Recreation Department?s James Brown Park, adjacent to the DPRD?s John Davis Recreation Center at 904 Civic Drive, while consolation bracket games will be at the Mack Gaston Community Center at 214 Fredrick St. in Dalton.

Of the schools in the tournament, five are from Whitfield or Murray counties, 13 others are from Georgia and five are from Tennessee. For the rest, competing ? and winning ? is nice, but for some of them, there are added incentives to leaving the comforts of home. It could be going to see a movie during down time before the tournament, hanging out together in the hotel room or laying underneath the team tent in between a long summer Saturday of football games.

Jackson coach Brent Eckley said his team began its six-hour trip from southeastern Missouri early Saturday morning. That cut back on the number of nights staying in a hotel, but he still thinks the team will be closer on the drive home.

?It?s still a really neat thing because we get to spend all day today together,? Eckley said. ?This isn?t the whole team, just part of it. (But) for the guys here, it?s good for them to build camaraderie with one another. Another good thing for me is it?s a chance to get to know the parents and for them to get involved.?

Balsmeyer said his school is in a ?poor county.? Orange County, in the southern tip of Indiana, has been troubled by ?high unemployment.?

?We go to this team camp in Bloomington (Ind.) (at the end of June) and stay in a hotel room. The kids like it,? he said. ?But we have guys 15, 16 and 17 years old who?ve never stayed in a hotel room before. I find that amazing. It?s an experience. That?s what we try to do with our program, get them out doing things they normally wouldn?t do with their families.?

It was a six-hour drive for Balsmeyer?s Rams to reach Dalton on Friday. The team spent the day together at a shopping center and then saw a movie. It?s all part of getting the players away from their ?comfort zone,? Balsmeyer said.

?These trips are good for us because we spend a lot of time together,? said Evan Jones, a Paoli senior defensive back. ?Hanging out like this gets us closer for the season.?

Scotlandville, located in Baton Rouge, La., used to have an offseason camp off of its campus, but coach Eric Randall said funding cuts prevented that from happening this summer. The nine-hour drive to Dalton is the biggest team-building event the Hornets will have.

?I think it gives your an opportunity to spend some time like you would if you were in college,? Randall said.

Scotlandville senior running back Dontrell Hilliard doesn?t view a trip like this as a way to ?force? the Hornets to get closer. However, he knows he?ll interact with teammates he might not otherwise.

?It gives me a chance to get to know other teammates and other faces and also get yourself known,? Hilliard said.

But in the time of social media, text messaging and smart phones, it is becoming a bit more difficult to channel that team-building environment among teenagers, Eckley said.

?At any point and time, if you feel uncomfortable, you can reach into your pocket and check to see if someone texted you, or check the weather or check Twitter,? Eckley said. ?It?s easier than face to face to just pop out (your phone). But we have good kids and they?re fairly tight anyways.?

Said Balsmeyer, ?I say it all the time, ?I?ll have to give you a dang phone so you can check coverages and things because you won?t talk. You?ll sit there on a bus and instead of talking to a guy (sitting next to you), you?ll text him.??

While coaches may not be able to force closeness, the combination of competition and a road trip seems to create a better chance of it happening.

?To travel for so long and spend time in a hotel, all of that is meaningful and you communicate more and hopefully can convert that to on-the-field success,? Randall said. ?In the future, we?ll do some type of trip in the summer time to get the quarterbacks to throw and do the same team-building things.?

'Prince of Pot' Marc Emery poised for return to Canada

B.C.'s Prince of Pot could be on the verge of an epic homecoming.

Marc Emery has been imprisoned in a U.S. jail since 2010 for selling marijuana seeds and recently applied to return to Canada to serve the rest of his five-year sentence.

His wife Jodie Emery broke the news on Twitter Wednesday that the U.S. government has now approved his transfer.

"Oh my god!!! Now Canada has to make a decision!!" she tweeted.

She urged Emery's supporters to write to the federal public safety minister to urge Ottawa to approve his transfer back to Canada.

It's not yet clear whether he would continue to serve time in jail here or if he could be released on conditions.

If Emery is freed it could have big implications for the budding marijuana legalization movement in B.C.

Sensible BC campaigners who aim to force a provincial referendum on pot reform are poised to launch a petition campaign this fall.

Elections BC has given the initiative the green light to begin registering canvassers next week.

Emery sold pot seeds by mail order from 1994 to 2005 in an effort to raise funds to end marijuana prohibition.

He was arrested in Canada by U.S. agents in 2005 and originally faced a 30-year sentence before a plea-bargain gave him a reduced five-year term.

Emery was extradited to the U.S. when the Canadian government refused to let him serve his time in this country.

His supporters have always considered him a political prisoner.

Much has changed while the leader of the B.C. Marijuana Party has been behind bars.

The biggest milestone was last November's vote in Washington State to legalize marijuana possession and set up a government system for sales.

Obama earned less in 2012, pays $112k in taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama made less in 2012 than in any other year since taking office, with about 40 percent of the nearly $609,000 in income that he and first lady Michelle Obama reported coming from book sales.

Obama, who renewed his call for higher taxes on the wealthy in the budget he released Wednesday, paid $112,214 in taxes last year, putting his effective federal tax rate at 18.4 percent. The Obamas donated almost one-quarter of their income to charity, according to tax returns released by the White House.

Most of the $608,611 that the Obamas reported in adjusted gross income came from the president's salary, as he reported $394,840 in wages. An additional $258,772 came from royalties from his books, including his 1995 memoir "Dreams From My Father," his 2006 political book, "The Audacity of Hope," and a 2010 children's book, "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters."

Income from Obama's books has fallen off since 2009, when his books sales surged after his inauguration. The Obamas made $5.5 million that year ? his first year in office ? but the figure dropped precipitously the next year to $1.73 million. In 2011, the Obamas reported about $790,000 in income.

The president and Mrs. Obama signed their tax returns on Monday ? one week before the April 15 deadline for Americans to file their 2012 returns.

Itemized deductions of $258,385 brought the Obama's taxable income down to $335,026. The first family deducted $45,056 in interest on the mortgage for their home in Chicago, plus $36,554 in state and local taxes and $26,751 in real estate taxes.

Through withholding and estimated tax payments during the year, the Obamas paid $129,029 to the Internal Revenue Service ? an overpayment of $16,815. The Obamas directed that, rather than receive a refund, the overpayment will be applied to their taxes for next year.

The Obamas also claimed $39,875 in income from outside the United States. A White House official said all of that income came from book royalties, but did not disclose details about which countries the income came from. The official was not authorized to comment publicly on Obama's taxes and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The president and first lady reported donating $150,034 ? or 24.6 percent of their income ? to 33 charities. That's a slight dip from the previous year, when the Obamas donated more than $172,000. The largest contribution last year was a $103,871 donation to Fisher House Foundation, which provides humanitarian services to military members, veterans and their families. Other charitable groups that received donations from the president for $5,000 or less include the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the United Negro College Fund.

The president and the first lady also paid $29,450 in income taxes to Illinois, according to their state tax returns.

The White House also released tax returns for Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, who teaches at Northern Virginia Community College.

The Bidens paid $87,851 in federal income taxes on $385,072 in adjusted gross income, for an effective federal tax rate of 22.8 percent. The vice president and his wife paid state income taxes in two states ? $13,531 in Delaware and $3,593 in Virginia. The Bidens overpaid a bit last year in their withholdings, so they'll get a refund of $4,608 from the IRS.

They reported donating $7,190 to charity. The largest sum of $2,400 went to the Catholic Diocese in Wilmington, Del.

The president this week revived his push for wealthier Americans to pay higher taxes, arguing that higher earners like himself should bear a larger share of the burden for deficit reduction. The $3.8 trillion budget blueprint he unveiled Wednesday proposed that "wealthy millionaires pay no less than 30 percent of income, after charitable contribution, in taxes," to ensure that poorer Americans don't get stuck paying higher rates than the wealthy. Obama also proposed a change in the way inflation is calculated that, if proposed, would have the effect of pushing more Americans into higher tax brackets.

"The president believes we must reform our tax system, which is why he has proposed policies like the Buffett Rule that would ask the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share while protecting families making under $250,000 from seeing their taxes go up," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement accompanying the release of Obama's tax returns.

During the negotiations with Congress over New Years, Obama won a tax increase on incomes over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples, although he had wanted those thresholds to be lower. The deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff preserved the lower Bush-era tax rates for the middle class.

Seiki 50inch 4K TV on sale for $1,299, offers Ultra HD for a regular HD price

The entry price for Ultra HDTV plunged by more than $10,000 earlier this week thanks to Sony's new 4K sets, but now it's going even lower with this model from Seiki. The brand is new to the US market and as such unfamiliar to most, but with a $1,300 listing on TigerDirect it's been lighting up AV enthusiast and deal-hunting forums alike. We haven't yet had a chance to see this display, but hope to take a look shortly. In the meantime, there are plenty of reasons not to be an early adopter -- the infamous eye charts suggest 4K's impact at this size may be reduced, it's an unknown company with unknown standards for quality and service, a new HDMI standard may be incoming and there's no content until the $699 FMP-X1 player arrives this summer -- but with a sub-$2K pricetag some would say you can't afford not to have an Ultra HD set in your possession. Those same people would also suggest inviting us over to watch the game (sports, console, but most likely a super high-res PC title if you can manage) on it, and indicate we are willing to bring refreshments.

[Thanks, Eric Kotz]
